John McCrady (zoologist)
John McCrady (September 11, 1911 – December 24, 1968) was a Louisiana painter and printmaker. McCrady was born in Canton, Mississippi and was raised in the American South. After winning a scholarship from the Art Students League of New York for his "Portrait of a Negro," McCrady studied art with Thomas Hart Benton and Kenneth Hayes Miller. McCrady went on to become one of the best-known twentieth-century southern artists and was known for depicting scenes from the South, particularly images of southern African Americans. He also founded the McCrady Art School in 1942 on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Life McCrady's father was an Episcopal minister named Edward McCrady, and his mother was Mary Ormond Tucker. They lived in Greenwood, Mississippi, Hammond, Louisiana, and settled in Oxford, Mississippi in 1921 when Edward McCrady accepted a position to teach philosophy at the University of Mississippi. Wilhelm Moritz Keferstein
Wilhelm Moritz Keferstein (7 June 1833, Winsen (Luhe) – 25 January 1870) was a German naturalist. He described a number of reptiles and amphibians for the first time. He originally studied hydraulic engineering in Hanover, later becoming a lecturer and professor of zoology at the University of Göttingen. With zoologist Ernst Ehlers (1835-1925), he wrote ''Zoologische Beiträge gesammelt im Winter 1859/60 in Neapel und Messina...'' in 1861. With Karl Wilhelm von Kupffer (1829-1902) he was co-author of a study on the electric organs of '' Gymnotus'' and ''Mormyrus'' that was published in Henle and Pfeufer's ''Zeitschrift für rationelle Medicin'' (Journal of rational medicine). He also made important contributions to Heinrich Georg Bronn's ''Die Klassen und Ordnungen des Thier-Reichs'' (Classes and Orders of the Animal Kingdom). Charles Alexandre Lesueur
Charles Alexandre Lesueur (1 January 1778 in Le Havre – 12 December 1846 in Le Havre) was a French naturalist, artist, and explorer. He was a prolific natural-history collector, gathering many type specimens in Australia, Southeast Asia, and North America, and was also responsible for describing numerous species, including the spiny softshell turtle ('' Apalone spinifera''), smooth softshell turtle ('' A. mutica''), and common map turtle ('' Graptemys geographica''). Both Mount Lesueur and Lesueur National Park in Western Australia are named in his honor. François Péron
François Auguste Péron (22 August 1775 – 14 December 1810) was a French naturalist and explorer. Life Péron was born in Cérilly, Allier, in 1775, the son of a tailor (not a harness maker as is frequently asserted). Although intended for the priesthood, due to the Revolution, Péron reluctantly joined the 2nd Allier Volunteer Battalion in 1792 and helped defend besieged Landau. In the following year he was wounded and taken prisoner by Prussian forces near Hochspeyer in the Pfalzwald. Imprisoned in the fortress of Magdeburg he was not repatriated to France until 1794. Having lost the sight of an eye, Péron was invalided out of the army. For two years he was Town Clerk in Cérilly before gaining a scholarship to study medicine in Paris. ''Turritopsis nutricula'' is a small hydrozoan that once reaching adulthood, can transfer its cells back to childhood. This adaptive trait likely evolved in order to extend the life of the individual. Several different species of the genus ''Turritopsis'' were formerly classified as ''T. nutricula'', including the "immortal jellyfish" which is now classified as '' T. dohrnii''. Life cycle Hydrozoans have two distinct stages in their life, a polyp stage and a medusa stage. The polyp stage is benthic, with the cells forming colonies, while the medusa stage is a singular, planktonic organism. Generally in hydrozoa the medusa develops from the asexual budding of the polyp and the polyp results from sexual reproduction of medusae. Charles Cleveland Nutting
Charles Cleveland Nutting (May 25, 1858 – January 23, 1927 in Iowa City, Iowa) was an American zoologist, born in Jacksonville, Illinois. He graduated from Blackburn University (1880) and received the M. A. degree from the same institution in 1882. He conducted various zoological expeditions—in Central America for the Smithsonian Institution (1882–84), in Florida (1885), on the Saskatchewan River (1891)—and was naturalist of the ''Albatross'' Hawaiian expedition in 1902. He was professor of zoology and curator of the Museum of Natural History of the University of Iowa from 1886 to 1890 and thereafter was head of his department.
