Turn It Around!
''Turn It Around!'' is a punk rock compilation album by '' Maximumrocknroll''. Originally released as two 7-inch records in October 1987, it served as a benefit to raise money for the Berkeley, California DIY punk scene (known as the Gilman Street Project). The compilation featured the first appearances of many bands who would later become well known outside of the scene, including Operation Ivy, Crimpshrine and Isocracy. Due to the poor sound quality of the original 7-inch version, ''Turn It Around!'' was reissued by Very Small Records in September 1991 as one LP. However, the compilation is currently out of print and has never seen a CD release. In retrospect, it has been cited as an important compilation album and served as an introduction to a number of the bands, most of which would go on to release albums on the then-newly formed Lookout Records. Sewer Trout
Sewer Trout was an American punk rock band, from Sacramento, California in 1985. The group's uptempo bass lines and fast-paced songs would serve as a basis and influence for many of the later California pop punk bands of the 1990s. The band consisted of Jim MacLean (Lead vocalist, lead vocals/Bass guitar, bass), his brother Hal MacLean (drums), and Keith Lehtinen (guitar/Backing vocalist, backing vocals), with Erik Benson joining as a second guitarist after meeting Hal at Sacramento State. Although Benson's progressive rock influences eventually led to him being kicked out after one disastrous show in Davis, California. Jim and Hal joined forces with Erik to form Oyster Toilet Mango and eventually the Well Hung Monks. Sewer Trout broke up when Jim moved to Corvallis, Oregon to join the Beaver's Geology Department and earn his master's degree. Yeastie Girlz
The Yeastie Girlz are a punk group formed in Berkeley, California. The band consists of Jane Guskin, Joyce Jimenez, Kate (Rosenberger) Rozo, and Cammie Toloui, who are all vocalists and lyricists for the group. They used stage names CamMaster Clit, Joyce Vagina, and Labia Jane during their early performances. They are known for their distinct style within the punk scene. Their sound is best categorized as a fusion of slam poetry and rap, all a cappella. The group refers to itself as "the very first of the Vaginacore Bands." This unique genre centers around breaking the stigma about taboo issues, usually relating directly to the female body. No Use for a Name (sometimes abbreviated NUFAN or No Use) was an American punk rock band from Sunnyvale, California, formed in 1986 by Chris Dodge (guitar), Steve Papoutsis (bass) and Rory Koff (drums). The band's sound evolved considerably through its career, starting off as a Bay Area-influenced punk band, moving on to a much heavier metallic-tinted sound to finally taking on a much lighter brand of melodic punk as the years passed. Following Tony Sly's death on July 31, 2012, the remaining members chose to disband the group out of respect for him. History No Use For a Name was formed in 1986 by longtime friends Dodge, Papoutsis and Koff. Sweet Baby (band)
Sweet Baby (originally known as Sweet Baby Jesus) was a pop punk band that originated from Berkeley, California, and was part of the 924 Gilman Street scene. They were signed to Ruby Records. The band was formed in 1986 by singer Dallas Denery and singer/guitarist Matt Buenrostro with Crispy Jim (later of The Saddlebacks) on bass and Dr. Frank (the frontman of The Mr. T Experience) on drums. Frank and Crispy Jim did not appear on any Sweet Baby recordings, having been already replaced by Sergie Loobkoff (Samiam, Knapsack) and Richie Bucher (Jüke, Wynona Ryders), respectively. Aaron Elliott aka Aaron Cometbus also played drums for them on their 1989 US tour. They had two songs on the Maximum Rock and Roll compilation ''Turn it Around'' (1988), "She's from Salinas" and "Pathetic." Billie Joe Armstrong
Billie Joe Armstrong (born February 17, 1972) is an American musician and actor. He is best known for being the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the rock band Green Day, which he co-founded with Mike Dirnt in 1987. He is also a guitarist and vocalist for the punk rock band Pinhead Gunpowder, and provides lead vocals for Green Day's side projects Foxboro Hot Tubs, the Network, the Longshot and the Coverups. Armstrong has been considered by critics as one of the greatest punk rock guitarists of all time. Armstrong developed an interest in music at a young age, and recorded his first song at the age of five. Larry Livermore
Lawrence Hayes (born October 28, 1947), better known by his stage name Larry Livermore, is an American singer, musician, record producer, and author, best known as the co-founder of Lookout Records. Biography In 1977, Hayes began to attend punk rock shows in the San Francisco bay area. He soon adopted the "punk rock name" Larry Livermore, an allusion to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a nuclear research and development facility in Livermore, California, run by the University of California. Tim Yohannan
Tim Yohannan (August 15, 1945 – April 3, 1998), also known as Tim Yo, was the founder of '' Maximum Rocknroll'', a radio show and fanzine documenting punk subculture in San Francisco. He also helped in establishing a number of DIY collectives, such as 924 Gilman Street, Blacklist Mailorder, and the Epicenter Zone record store. Biography Yohannan was initially a 1960s counterculture-era leftist, before shifting this ideology to the punk scene. Issue 425 of ''Maximumrocknroll'' stated, "Tim Yo was a Marxist!" As a self-appointed "punks' herdsman", Yohannan had a reputation as being notoriously difficult. Yohannan died at 53 on April 3, 1998 from complications from lymphatic cancer. The band Green Day recorded the song " Platypus (I Hate You)" on their 1997 album ''Nimrod''. The song does not directly mention Yohannan.
