Turkish Women Painters
The first Turkish painters appeared no earlier than the mid-19th century during the Ottoman Empire era. (However, there were a few miniaturists before the 19th century.) The first art academy in Turkey was established in the 19th century but was meant only for male art students. Therefore, art remained gender-segregated until 1914, when an art school for women was established, but still, they could work under strict rules since working on nude models of the opposite sex was prohibited. The daughters of the enlightened people in Turkish society were allowed to participate in art privately, and they could not make it a career. Therefore, coming from such families, a girl child could get support from the family but only to practice art as a hobby and not as a profession. Neşe Aybey (; 2 March 1930 – 4 January 2015), also written Neş'e Aybey, was a Turkish painter, Miniature art, miniaturist and academic in the field of miniature art, one of the ''Traditional Turkish Arts'' and part of the Ottoman Book Arts. Emel Korutürk (née Cimcoz; 1915 – 12 March 2013) was a Turkish painter and a former First Lady of Turkey. Early years She was born in 1915 as Emel Cimcoz, the fourth child of Salah Cimcöz and his wife Hasene Hanim. During her early childhood her father was exiled by the Allies of World War I to Malta. After her primary education, she studied at Lycée Notre Dame de Sion Istanbul, a prestigious school for girls. Hülya Vurnal İkizgül (born 1967) is a Turkish women in fine arts, Turkish mosaicist, sculptor and ceramic artist. Biography She was born in 1967 in Istanbul, Turkey. Nevin Çokay (1930 – 24 July 2012) was a Turkish painter and high school teacher of art and history of art. Life Çokay was born in Istanbul, and spent her childhood in different regions of Turkey. In 1947, she started to attend to the studio of Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu at the Academy of Fine Arts Istanbul, where she finished in 1953. She also joined The Group Ten. Sevgi Çağal (born February 17, 1957) is a Turkish painter and sculptor. Biography Çağal was born on February 17, 1957, in New York City, United States.
