Turkey At The 2018 Winter Paralympics
Turkey sent a competitor to the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Their sole competitor was alpine skier Mehmet Çekiç. Turkey made an effort to qualify in other sports, including wheelchair curling, but proved unable to win spots in the Games for those. Turkey is a recent competitor as nations go, making its first Winter Paralympics appearance at the 2014 Games. Team In December 2017, the National Paralympic Committee of Turkey announced that one person would go to Pyeongchang. Alpine skier Mehmet Çekiç was the person selected. The National Paralympic Committee provided Çekiç with all the resources he needed. This was done with assistance from Turkey's national ski federation. The country wanted to send more people to South Korea for the Games. People had problems with the qualifications for the Games. 2018 Winter Paralympics
The 2018 Winter Paralympics (), the 12th Paralympic Winter Games, and also more generally known as the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, were an international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), that was held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, from 9 to 18 March 2018. Mehmet Çekiç
Mehmet Çekiç (born 1 January 1970) is a Turkish Paralympic alpine skier who competes in the LW4 disability class of men's slalom, standing and giant slalom, standing events. He represented his country, Turkey, at the 2014 Sochi and 2018 PyeongChang Paralympics. Private life Mehmet Çekiç was born on 1 January 1970. He graduated from the University of Upper Alsace in Colmar, France. He lives in France, where he owns and manages a butchers and grocery shop in Barr, Bas-Rhin, France. He has one son. In 2009, he was involved in a motorcycle accident, which resulted in his disability after his leg was amputated mid-shinbone, below the knee. Turan Akalın
Turan Akalın (born 1984) is a Turkish wheelchair tennis player and wheelchair curler. In 1998 at the age of 14, he lost his both legs below knee at a train accident in Izmit as he was crossing railroad. Akalın is now working at the Kocaeli University's hospital. He began with tennis playing in 2004 at the İzmit Tennis Club. Akalın won the singles and the doubles titles at the Turkish Wheelchair Tennis Championship in 2011 and 2012. In 2012, he began performing wheelchair curling at the Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi S.K., and was admitted to the newly formed national team. Para-alpine skiing is an adaptation of alpine skiing for athletes with a disability. The sport evolved from the efforts of disabled veterans in Germany and Austria during and after the Second World War. The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee Sports Committee.
