Turan Akalın
Turan Akalın (born 1984) is Turkish wheelchair tennis player and wheelchair curler. In 1998 at the age of 14, he lost his both legs below knee at a train accident in Izmit as he was crossing railroad. Akalın is now working at the Kocaeli University's hospital. He began with tennis playing in 2004 at the İzmit Tennis Club. Akalın won the singles and the doubles titles at the Turkish Wheelchair Tennis Championship in 2011 and 2012. In 2012, he began performing wheelchair curling at the Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi S.K., and was admitted to the newly formed national team. Akalın participated as skip at the 2013 World Wheelchair Curling Championship – Qualification Event in Lohja, Finland, at which Turkey made its international debut in this Winter Paralympic sport category. Wheelchair Tennis
Wheelchair tennis is one of the forms of tennis adapted for wheelchair users. The size of the court, net height and rackets are the same, but there are two major differences from pedestrian tennis: athletes use specially designed wheelchairs, and the ball may bounce up to two times, where the second bounce may also occur outside the court. Wheelchair tennis has been played at all four Grand Slams since 2007, and is one of the sports contested at the Summer Paralympics. There are three categories, Men, Women, and Quads; each category has singles and doubles tournaments. The Quad, the newest division, is for players that have substantial loss of function in at least one upper limb, but may include various disabilities besides quadriplegia. Curling In Turkey
Curling is a minor sport in Turkey. It is governed by the Turkish Ice Skating Federation and has been a member of the World Curling Federation since 2009. The country has one dedicated curling venue, the Milli Piyango Curling Arena in Erzurum. Turkey is ranked 39th in the world in men's curling and 31st in women's. As of November 2012, there are around 180 licensed curlers in the country, of which 120 are playing actively. Wheelchair Curling
Wheelchair curling is an adaptation of curling for athletes with a disability affecting their lower limbs or gait. Wheelchair curling is governed by the World Curling Federation, and is one of the sports in the Winter Paralympic Games. Overview Wheelchair curling is played with the same rocks and on the same ice as regular curling, though the rocks are thrown from a stationary wheelchair and there is no sweeping. Rocks may be thrown by hand while leaning over the side of the wheelchair, or pushed by a delivery stick. This is a pole with a bracket that fits over the rock handle, allowing the rock to be pushed while applying correct rotation. Stones delivered between the house and the near hogline must be placed within 18 inches either side of the centre line and must be released prior to reaching the near hogline. 2013 World Wheelchair Curling Championship – Qualification Event
The qualification event of the 2013 World Wheelchair Curling Championship was held from November 3 to 8, 2012 at the Kisakallio Sports Institute in Lohja, Finland, which hosted the qualification tournaments for the past two World Wheelchair Curling Championships. The qualification event was open to any World Curling Federation affiliated national team not already qualified. The event's two top finishers, Norway and Finland, will join the top 8 finishers from the last World Wheelchair Curling Championship at this season's event in Sochi, Russia.
