Tunka Manin
Tunka Manin (c. 1010–1078) was a ruler of the Ghana Empire who reigned from 1062 to at least 1076 C.E. Preceded by Ghana Bassi, Manin was the last ruler of the Ghana Empire before the Almoravid conquest. Accounts of Tunka Manin come from Al-Bakri who described him as a "lover of justice and favorable to Muslims". Manin had succeeded Bassi in 1062 and like him had maintained his traditional religion rather than converting to Islam. The Almoravids under Abu Bakr ibn Umar had been angered by Bassi's refusal to convert and had started invading the empire. In 1076, the Almoravids succeeded in sacking the empire's capital of Kumbi Saleh. Manin continued to rule as a vassal of the Almoravids and paid tribute to them. The Almoravids were expelled in 1087, but the empire had been severely weakened and many former territories had become independent. Ondřej Tunka (born 29 September 1990) is a Czech slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2008. He won four medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with three golds (K1: 2017, K1 team: 2015, 2017) and a bronze (K1 team: 2018). Tunka (; , ''Tünkhen'') is a village in Tunkinsky District of the Buryat Republic, Russia, located southwest of Irkutsk in the Tunka Valley. In the 19th century, it served as a settlement to where a large number of political prisoners were forcibly resettled. Among them was a group of Catholic priests, 145 altogether, arrested during the 1863 January Uprising against the Russian Empire. Among other notable political prisoners kept there were Bronisław Szwarce and Józef Piłsudski. Tunka Experiment
The Tunka experiment now named TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) measures air showers, which are initiated by charged cosmic rays or high energy gamma rays. TAIGA is situated in Siberia in the Tunka valley close to lake Baikal. Meanwhile, TAIGA consists of five different detector systems: Tunka-133, Tunka-Rex, and Tunka-Grande for charged cosmic rays; Tunka-HiSCORE and Tunka-IACT for gamma astronomy. From the measurements of each detector it is possible to reconstruct the arrival direction, energy and type of the cosmic rays, where the accuracy is enhanced by the combination of different detector systems. The aim of the cosmic-ray measurements is to solve the question of the origin of the cosmic rays in the energy range up to about 1 EeV.
