Tunisian Forum For Economic And Social Rights
The Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (Arabic: المنتدى التونسي للحقوق الإقتصادية والإجتماعية; French: Forum Tunisien pour les Droits Economiques et Sociaux, or FTDES) is a non-governmental organization in Tunisia. FTDES studies and makes recommendations about such socioeconomic issues as protest movements, economic policy, unemployment, state violence, transitional justice, anti-corruption, marginalization of Tunisia's interior (west-central) regions, and the Mediterranean migration crisis. The organization cites the January 2008 Gafsa Basin protests as well as the 2011 revolution as inspiration for its work. The current FTDES executive director is Alaa Talbi. Among the core activities of the FTDES is researching and publishing monitoring reports on current issues of social and economic concern in Tunisia. 2008 Tunisian Protests
The 2008 Gafsa strikes, also referred to as the Gafsa Social Movement, Gafsa events or the revolt in the Gafsa mining basin is an important social movement that shook the mining region of southwestern Tunisia—particularly the town of Redeyef, but also Moularès, Métlaoui, and Mdhilla—for nearly six months in 2008. These events took place in the phosphate-rich Gafsa mining basin, 350 kilometers southwest of Tunis, in a central region hard hit by unemployment and poverty. The protests were the most important social unrest known by Tunisia since the “bread riots” in 1983–84 and since the coming to power of President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali in 1987. Tunisian Revolution
The Tunisian Revolution, also called the Jasmine Revolution, was an intensive 28-day campaign of civil resistance. It included a series of street demonstrations which took place in Tunisia, and led to the ousting of longtime president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011. It eventually led to a thorough democratisation of the country and to free and democratic elections. The demonstrations were caused by high unemployment, food inflation, corruption, a lack of political freedoms (such as freedom of speech) and poor living conditions. The protests constituted the most dramatic wave of social and political unrest in Tunisia in three decades and resulted in scores of deaths and injuries, most of which were the result of action by police and security forces. Alaa Talbi ( ar, علاء الطالبي ) is a Tunisian Civil Society and human Rights activist. He was born in Kasserine, on April 4, 1978. Alaa currently occupies the position of Chief Executive in the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights - FTDES, in which he advocates for specific issues such as social movements, women rights and empowerment, and immigrants. He is part of other international and regional organisations as a founding or board member; such as the Tunisian affiliate of the Canadian foundation Alternatives. EuroMed Rights, formerly the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN, French: Réseau euro-mediterranéen des droits de l'Homme) is a network of 80 human rights organisations, institutions and individuals based in 30 countries in Europe and the Mediterranean region. Lawyers Without Borders (LWOB) is an international non-profit organization founded in 2000 by Connecticut Attorney, Christina M. Storm, which operates worldwide from its central headquarters located in New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A. Its single affiliate, Lawyers Without Borders UK, was founded in 2003 and is headquartered in London, having acquired UK charity status in June 2010.
