Tune-Yards
Tune-Yards (stylized as tUnE-yArDs) is the Oakland, California–based music project of Merrill Garbus (vocals, various instruments) and Nate Brenner (bass, various instruments). Garbus's music draws from an eclectic variety of sources and uses elements such as loop pedals, ukulele, vocals, and lo-fi percussion. Tune-Yards’ 2011 album ''Whokill'' was ranked the number one album of that year in ''The Village Voice's'' annual Pazz and Jop critics’ poll. The album ''Nikki Nack'' was released in 2014, with its first single, "Water Fountain", being picked up by Google Pixel in 2016 for an advertising campaign. ''Sketchy'' (stylized as sketchy.) is the fifth studio album by American indie pop band Tune-Yards. It was released on March 26, 2021, through 4AD. Background Writing for the album began in 2019, in the band's own studio in Oakland, California. Release and promotion Tune-Yards announced on January 27, 2021 they were releasing their fifth studio album on March 26, 2021. Singles On September 22, 2020, Tune-Yards released "Nowhere, Man", the first single in two years. The single is a reference to The Beatles' 1965 song '' Nowhere Man''. ''Nikki Nack'' is the third album by American band Tune-Yards, released by 4AD in May 2014. On March 3, 2014, singer Merril Garbus posted a two-and-a-half-minute megamix of tracks from the album on her website, thanking fans for "your support and patience while we cooked this chicken." A subsequent tour was announced, including a batch of international tour dates and a few festivals. The album features work with record producers John Hill and Malay. On March 18, 2014, Garbus released the first album single, "Water Fountain". On April 25, 2014, NPR began streaming the album as part of its ''First Listen'' series. ''Whokill'' (stylized as ''w h o k i l l'') is the second full-length release by Merrill Garbus' project Tune-Yards. It was released on 4AD Records on April 19, 2011. It was the number one album of 2011 on '' The Village Voice's'' annual Pazz and Jop critic's poll The album was recognized as one of The 100 Best Albums of the Decade So Far by Pitchfork in August 2014. Musical style The album covers a "formidable range of genres and styles" including acoustic folk, rock, R&B, punk rock, funk, free jazz and Afrobeat. ''Bird-Brains'' (stylized as ''BiRd-BrAiNs'') is the debut album by American lo-fi musician Merrill Garbus' project Tune-Yards. It was originally released as a Compact Cassette on Marriage Records on June 9, 2009, and was re-released on August 17 by 4AD as a limited-edition pressing. It was released worldwide on November 16, 2009, with two bonus tracks. The album was recorded almost exclusively by Garbus on a hand recorder and mixed using Audacity. Speaking to Charlotte Richardson Andrews of ''The Guardian'', she noted her instrumental limitations and how they led to a dependence on percussion: "I had no bass – literally, I didn't own one – so the drums had to be big." Marriage Records is a small, independent record label formed in Portland, Oregon. It was founded in 2001 by Curtis Knapp and Adrian Orange. Naytronix is the solo musical project of Nate Brenner, an American multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer who is also a member of the band Tune-Yards. History Brenner released the self-titled ''Naytronix'' EP May 7, 2012 followed by his debut album ''Dirty Glow'' on October 9, 2012. Both releases were on the Los Angeles record label Plug Research. Pazz & Jop was an annual poll of top musical releases, compiled by American newspaper ''The Village Voice'' and created by music critic Robert Christgau. It published lists of the year's top releases for 1971 and, after Christgau's two-year absence from the ''Voice'', each year from 1974 onward. The polls were tabulated from the submitted year-end top 10 lists of hundreds of music critics.
