The hammer is a part of a firearm that is used to strike the percussion cap/primer (firearm), primer, or a separate firing pin, to ignite the propellant and fire the projectile. It is so called because it resembles a hammer in both form and function. The hammer itself is a metal piece that forcefully rotates about a pivot point. The term tumbler can refer to a part of the hammer or a part mechanically attached to the pivot-point of the hammer, depending on the particular firearm under discussion (see Half-cock#Common examples and breakage, half-cock). A tumbler is a flat-floored beverage container usually made of plastic, glass or stainless steel. Theories vary as to the etymology of the word ''tumbler''. One such theory is that the glass originally had a pointed or convex base and could not be set down without spilling. Another is that they had weighted bottoms which caused them to right themselves if knocked over. Originally, the term tumbler referred to a type of drinking glass with a pointed or rounded base, which prevented it from being put down until it was empty, encouraging the drinker to finish their beverage in one go. Over time, the design evolved into the flat-bottomed glassware that is known today, which can comfortably sit on tables and counters without tipping over. Tumbler pigeons are varieties of domesticated pigeons that are descendants of the rock dove that have been selected for their ability to tumble or roll over backwards in flight. This ability has been known in domesticated breeds of pigeons for centuries. In Wendell Levi's book ''The Pigeon'', reference is made to pigeons with this tumbling ability existing in India before the year 1590. Charles Darwin, in his book ''The Origin of Species'', makes reference to the Short-faced Tumbler which was a popular breed during his lifetime, and still can be found exhibited at pigeon shows today.
