Tugela Vaal Transfer Scheme
The Tugela Vaal water Transfer Scheme is an irrigation project developed in the Drakensberg mountains at the Oliviershoek Pass in South Africa. The project will thus allow the annual transfer from the Tugela River, Tugela basin (in KwaZulu-Natal) of 630 million m3 of water to the Vaal River, Vaal basin (in the Free State (province), Free State) in the north, and ultimately the Vaal dam in Gauteng. Various pumping stations and water reservoirs have been or are to be created or adapted as part of the implementation of this project. The main dams built are: * the Woodstock Dam in KwaZulu-Natal; * the Kilburn Dam in KwaZulu-Natal; * the Driekloof Dam in the Free State; * the Sterkfontein Dam in the Free State. Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme
The Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme is an energy storage facility built in the South African provinces of Free State and KwaZulu-Natal starting in 1974 and completed by 1981. Four dams are involved in the scheme; the Driekloof Dam (''joined to the Sterkfontein Dam''), the Kilburn Dam, the Woodstock Dam and the Driel Barrage. Electricity generation equipment is located between Driekloof Dam and Kilburn Dam. Since the Driekloof Dam/Sterkfontein Dam also forms part of the Tugela-Vaal Water Project some of the water pumped to Driekloof Dam might end up flowing to the Vaal Dam and not be available for return to the Kilburn Dam. Lesotho Highlands Water Project
The Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) is an ongoing water supply project with a hydropower component, developed in partnership between the governments of Lesotho and South Africa. It comprises a system of several large dams and tunnels throughout Lesotho and delivers water to the Vaal Dam, Vaal River System in South Africa. In Lesotho, it involves the rivers Malibamatso, Matsoku, Senqunyane, and Senqu. It is Africa's largest water transfer scheme. The purpose of the project is to provide Lesotho with a source of revenue in exchange for the provision of water to South Africa, as well as generate hydroelectricity for Lesotho. As of 2015, royalties paid by South Africa to the Lesotho government amount to R780 million, equivalent to about 5 percent of Lesotho's state income outside of taxes. Bergville
Bergville(formerly known as Ntenjwa) is a town with a Rich History. *History The area was formerly known as Ntenjwa (eMangwaneni). The land was taken by the Hlongwane clan from the Hlubi clan after a conflict in the mid-19th century, believed to be around the 1850s. The conflict led to the displacement of the Hlubi clan. Despite being a chiefdom, the Hlongwane chief retains authority over the area, while acknowledging the supreme kingship of the Zulu monarch. Bergville is equidistant from Johannesburg and Durban and is also known as the gateway to the Northern Drakensberg holiday resorts. Drakensberg Hydropower
The Drakensberg ( Zulu: uKhahlamba, Sotho: Maloti, Afrikaans: Drakensberge) is the eastern portion of the Great Escarpment, which encloses the central Southern African plateau. The Great Escarpment reaches its greatest elevation – within the border region of South Africa and Lesotho. The Drakensberg escarpment stretches for more than from the Eastern Cape Province in the South, then successively forms, in order from south to north, the border between Lesotho and the Eastern Cape and the border between Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal Province. Thereafter it forms the border between KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, and next as the border between KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga Province.
