''The Killer'' (, sometimes translated ''The Killer without Reason'' or ''The Killer without Cause'') is a play written by Eugène Ionesco in 1958. It is the first of Ionesco's Berenger plays, the others being ''Rhinoceros (play), Rhinocéros'' (1959), ''Le Roi se meurt, Exit the King'' (1962), and ''Le Piéton de l'air, A Stroll in the Air'' (1963). Plot In ''The Killer'', Berenger (Ionesco’s downtrodden everyman) discovers an ideal "radiant city". The elation Berenger feels in the city of light is cut short by the discovery that the city is host to a killer who drowns his victims in a pool after luring them there by offering to show them a "picture of the colonel". Berenger leaves the radiant city after Dany, a woman he falls in love with instantly and believes that he is engaged to, is murdered, and he spends much of the play tracking down the killer. Mildred Avis Bunnage (22 April 1923, Ardwick, Manchester – 4 October 1990, Thorpe Bay, Southend-on-Sea) was an English actress of film, stage and television. She attended Manley Park Municipal School and Chorlton Central School in Manchester. She worked as a secretary and a nursery teacher before deciding to become an actress. She gained stage experience in rep and made her first professional appearance at Chorlton Rep Theatre in Manchester in 1947. Toby Hadoke ( ; born 2 January 1974) is an English actor, writer, stand-up comedian and comedy promoter. He is known for his work on the Manchester comedy circuit, where he performs regularly, and as a prominent fan of the television series ''Doctor Who''. Nigel Stock (21 September 1919 – 23 June 1986) was a British actor who played character roles in many films and television dramas. Eric Leslie Barker (12 February 1912 – 1 June 1990) was an English comedy actor. He is most remembered for his roles in the popular British '' Carry On'' films, although he appeared only in the early films in the series, apart from returning for '' Carry On Emmannuelle'' in 1978.
