Tsuneishi Cebu Shipyard
Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu), Inc. maintains a shipyard in Balamban, Cebu, Philippines. History Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu), Inc. or THI as a corporation was established in September 1994 as a joint venture between Japanese firm Tsuneishi Shipbuilding and Cebu-based Aboitiz Group. The groundbreaking for the shipyard in Balamban happened in the same year. In 1995, the first phase of the shipyard, Slipway No. 1 was completed. THI also acquired two floating docks. The following year the ship repair operations began. In 1997, THI built and delivered its first ship, the 23,000- DWT MV ''Sea Amelita''. In September 16, 1998, THI became a PEZA-registered locator. Slipway No. 2 was finished in 2004 and inaugurated the following year by then president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. In May 2009, a building dock was inaugurated. Balamban
Balamban, officially the Municipality of Balamban (; ; ), is a municipality in the province of Cebu, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 95,136 people. Balamban is known for its shipbuilding industry. History There is no exact date which can be ascertained as the establishment date for the settlement of Balamban. According to oral history, a polity called Balambang was part of a pre-Hispanic monarchy called Hinulawan located in the present Balamban barangay of Nangka. A Spanish document attests that the community was recognized as a town during Spanish colonial period. The first administrator of the ''pueblo'' was Ciriaco Gutierrez, a Spanish captain who was appointed in 1857. Tsuneishi Shipbuilding
is a Japan-based global shipbuilding company. History Businessman Katsutaro Kambara founded the Shiohama Dockyard in 1917 at the site of the current Tsuneishi Shipyard. His previous venture was Kambara Kisen Co., Ltd, a shipping firm. The business started with constructing wooden ships. Shiohama was later merged with the Fujii Dockyard and Nishihama Dockyard in the Tuneishi area to formally establish the Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. in 1942. After World War II, Tsuneishi shifted to producing steel ships. The first steel ship, the ''Mikomaru'' was built in 1958. In 1968, Tuneishi finished its 200,000-metric-ton repair facility.
