TsUM (Almaty)
TsUM — Central Universal Department Store (; ) is a department store in Almaty. Modeled after the Moscow TsUM, the Almaty TsUM is housed in a 4-story Stalinist building located at the intersection of Abylai Khan Avenue and Jibek Joly Street in the Arbat area. The Almaty TsUM is currently a popular visited retail destination and has undergone several refurbishments over the years. History Soviet era The store was built in 1961 according to the design of the Kazgiproselstroy Institute. The facade was crafted in the tradition of Stalinist architecture, adorned with bas-reliefs, and featured marble stairs with carved parapets inside. The initial total floor space was 4,500 m², and during its first year, the store's trade volume reached 42.8 million rubles, prompting the need for additional space. ''The Needle'' () is a 1988 Soviet thriller film. It stars rock musicians Viktor Tsoi (of Kino) and Pyotr Mamonov (of Zvuki Mu). The film premiered on 16 September 1988 in Almaty and in February 1989 in Moscow. ''The Needle'' is known for being one of the first Kazakh new wave films, and was one of the most watched films in the Soviet Union in 1989. Plot An enigmatic drifter known as Moro (who remains unnamed throughout the movie) arrives in Alma-Ata to extract a debt from a lowly criminal known as Spartak. He tracks down his ex-girlfriend, Dina, who lets him stay in her apartment. Meeting his debtor in a cafe called "Parliament", Moro learns that Spartak also owes money to a lot of other people. Later, he finds out that Dina's employer, the surgeon Artur, is supplying her with drugs and using her apartment to store morphine. The Northern Fleet (, ''Severnyy flot'') is the Naval fleet, fleet of the Russian Navy in the Arctic. Kyzyl-Tan (Almaty)
Kyzyl-Tan (Russian: Кызыл-Тан, '' tr. kyzyl tan'') is a building of the former Verny Trading House, located at 63 Jibek Joly Street in Almaty, Kazakhstan. It is an architectural monument of the late 19th - early 20th centuries. Sources are divided on its architect and its time of construction. According to some, it was built in 1912 by the architect . Others suggest it was built in 1896 by the architect Paul Gourdet to house Iskhak Gabdulvaliev's store. Constructivist architecture was a constructivism (art), constructivist style of modern architecture that flourished in the Soviet Union in the 1920s and early 1930s. Abstract and austere, the movement aimed to reflect modern industrial society and urban space, while rejecting decorative stylization in favor of the industrial assemblage of materials. Designs combined advanced technology and engineering with an avowedly communist social purpose.
