The True Whig Party was an Politics of Australia, Australian List of frivolous political parties, joke party, formed by satirist Alan Fitzgerald (satirist), Alan Fitzgerald. History In 1966, frustrated with the lack of power that the Australian Capital Territory Advisory Council had, Alan Fitzgerald announced he was forming the True Whig Party. He called on voters to write his or his party's names on ballot papers for the Division of Australian Capital Territory at the 1966 Australian federal election, 1966 federal election. Hearing that many voters had done so, Fitzgerald announced on 14 August 1967 that he would stand for the Advisory Council at the 1967 Australian Capital Territory election, upcoming election in September. Alan Fitzgerald (satirist)
Alan John Fitzgerald (5 November 193531 March 2011) was an Australian author, journalist and satirist. He was known for his unwavering opposition to the Australian republican movement and worked alongside Tony Abbott during Abbott's tenure as president of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy (ACM) during the 1990s. Fitzgerald was a significant figure in the founding of the National Press Club, serving as president for several years. As a journalist, he provided his services to numerous publications and programmes, in both print and radio journalism, including '' The Herald'', ''The Age'', '' The Bulletin'' and '' The Sunday Australian''. He also achieved considerable recognition as an author, having developed a niche in which he wrote about Canberran history and culture; ''Fitzgerald's Canberra'' and ''Life in Canberra'' are two notable examples of his writing in this area. The 1970 Australian Capital Territory election was held on 12 September 1970 to elect all eight members of the Advisory Council, the main elected representative body of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The ACT Labor Party, officially known as the Australian Labor Party (ACT Branch) and commonly referred to simply as ACT Labor, is the Australian Capital Territory branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). The branch is the current ruling party in the ACT and is led by Andrew Barr, who has concurrently served as chief minister since 2014. The Australia Party was a minor centrist political party in Australia from 1969 to 1986. It was most influential in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The party was established in 1969 under the leadership of Senator Reg Turnbull, as a merger of Turnbull's supporters and Gordon Barton's Australian Reform Movement. Turnbull's involvement was short-lived and he resigned from the party in 1970. At federal level, the party achieved its best result at the 1970 Senate election, with nearly three percent of the national vote. Red Hill is a suburb of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia. The suburb is named after the northernmost hill of the ridge to the west of the suburb. The ridge is a reserve and managed as part of the Canberra Nature Park. The hill is an element of the central Canberra design axis. History The name 'Red Hill' was gazetted as a suburb name in 1928. This was the name associated with the hill since the days of the early settlers and probably suggested by the red soil in the area. Streets are named after ships and explorers.
