''True Files'' (Simplified Chinese, Chinese: 真实档案) is an English language television docu-drama telecast on Channel 5 (Singaporean TV channel), MediaCorp Channel 5, with each episode (except the last episode of Season 3, ''The Unsolved'') re-enacting major court proceedings, mostly of murder, in Singapore. When the inaugural season was telecast in 2002, its first episode was re-slotted to be telecast later, when numerous public feedback was received by the station complaining that it was too graphic after watching trailers for the pilot episode. The show was also pushed back to a 10 p.m. time slot from the fourth episode onwards as a result. Nonetheless, the hype helped the show to enjoy favourable viewership ratings. Over five years, a total of five seasons had been telecasted, with the final season airing in 2007. The show was hosted and narrated by veteran actor Lim Kay Tong from Seasons 1 to 4. Lim Kay Tong
Lim Kay Tong (born 10 July 1954) is a Singaporean film, television and stage actor. Notably, he played supporting roles in films including ''Shanghai Surprise'' (1986), ''Noble House (miniseries), Noble House'' (1988), and ''Brokedown Palace'' (1999), and was the lead actor in ''Growing Up (Singaporean TV series), Growing Up'' (1996–2001) and ''Perth (film), Perth'' (2004). Lim has been called "Singapore's finest actor", "Singapore's best-known actor", and Singapore's answer to thespians Ian McKellen and Alec Guinness. Lim is a co-founder and former board member of TheatreWorks (Singapore), TheatreWorks. Toa Payoh Ritual Murders
The Toa Payoh ritual murders took place in Singapore in 1981. On 25 January, the body of a nine-year-old girl was found at a block of public housing flats in the town of Toa Payoh, and two weeks later, the body of a ten-year-old boy was found nearby. The murders were masterminded by Adrian Lim, a self-styled healer who pretended to have supernatural powers and scammed people for years before the murders. He had also been sexually assaulting female clients, often preying on younger women from impoverished backgrounds. He married one such woman, Tan Mui Choo, and took another woman, Hoe Kah Hong, as his "holy wife"—a term he used to manipulate women into having sex with him. Lim subjected them to extensive physical, mental and financial abuse, as well as sexual torture, for years before instigating the killings. Murder Of Liang Shan Shan
Liang Shan Shan ( – 2 October 1989; ) was a 17-year-old Malaysian schoolgirl who was reported missing in Singapore on 2 October 1989. Liang was found dead nearly two weeks later at Yishun Industrial Park, where her highly decomposed body was discovered by a group of National Servicemen who were training nearby that area. Despite conducting a post-mortem examination, the cause of Liang's death was uncertain due to the high state of decomposition and disappearance of certain body parts. Police investigations revealed that prior to her disappearance and murder, Liang was last seen boarding her school bus and left the school at 1pm on 2 October 1989, the same day she went missing. The school bus driver, 34-year-old Oh Laye Koh (), was arrested as a suspect for Liang's alleged murder, solely based on circumstantial evidence against him. Killing Of Muawanatul Chasanah
On 2 December 2001, a 19-year-old Indonesian maid, Muawanatul Chasanah, was found beaten to death in a house by the Bedok Reservoir, Singapore. Her killer was Ng Hua Chye, a tour guide and Chasanah's employer. Ng's wife, Tan Chai Hong, was also discovered to be involved. Both were arrested and charged in connection to the maid's death. Ng was eventually sentenced to 18 years and six months' imprisonment with 12 strokes of the cane for culpable homicide, while Ng's wife, who did not take part in the killing, was given a jail term of nine months for maid abuse and failing to make a police report on her husband's offences. Andrew Road Triple Murders
The Andrew Road triple murder was a case of robbery turned murder in a bungalow at Andrew Road, Singapore, in 1983. The robbery was committed by two young men, Sek Kim Wah and Nyu Kok Meng, armed with a rifle and knife. During the robbery, Sek murdered three of the five hostages while the Nyu protected the remaining two hostages from his partner. Eventually both were arrested, with Sek charged with murder and hanged while Nyu, who did not take part in the killings, receiving a life sentence and caning for armed robbery. It was further revealed in police investigations that Sek was also responsible for an unrelated double murder of two more victims, whom he killed using the same modus operandi as for the Andrew Road victims. He is seen as the first and only serial killer in Singapore to date, albeit Adrian Lim killed three victims in three separate instances. Anthony Ler
Anthony Ler Wee Teang ( – 13 December 2002) was a Singaporean convicted murderer who hired a youth to murder his wife, 30-year-old real-estate agent Annie Leong Wai Mun, who was in the midst of a divorce with him. Ler's motive was to become the sole owner of their flat and to gain custody of their four-year-old daughter. Ler approached five youths and offered them a reward of S$100,000 to kill Leong. A 15-year-old boy whom Ler had known for five years accepted the offer. Ler threatened and manipulated the youth to carry out the deed. After several failed attempts, the youth fatally stabbed Leong. The boy was not named to protect his identity since he was a minor. Court documents and media instead referred to the boy as "Z". Anthony Ler was convicted of masterminding the murder, and was hanged after he lost his appeal and clemency plea.
