''Tron'' (stylized as ''TRON'') is a 1982 American science fiction action adventure film written and directed by Steven Lisberger from a story by Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird. The film stars Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a computer programmer and video game developer who is transported inside the software world of a mainframe computer where he interacts with programs in his attempt to escape; it also stars Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner, Cindy Morgan, and Barnard Hughes. ''Tron'', along with '' The Last Starfighter'', was one of cinema's earliest films to use extensive computer-generated imagery (CGI). Steven Lisberger
Steven M. Lisberger (born April 24, 1951) is an American film director, producer and writer famous for directing '' Tron'' in 1982. Early life and education Lisberger was born in 1951 in New York City and grew up in Hazleton, Pennsylvania. Of his ethnic background, he said that his father was Jewish while his mother's side was half Jewish and half Christian, both native German. Lisberger attended The Hill School in Pottstown, and Tufts University. He went on to become a 1974 graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. Career While attending Tufts University, Lisberger and five associates formed Lisberger Studios. Computer-generated imagery (CGI) is the use of computer graphics to create or contribute to images in art, printed media, video games, simulators, and visual effects in films, television programs, shorts, commercials, and videos. The images may be static ( still images) or dynamic ( moving images), in which case CGI is also called '' computer animation''. CGI may be two-dimensional (2D), although the term "CGI" is most commonly used to refer to the 3-D computer graphics used for creating characters, scenes and special effects in films and television, which is described as "CGI animation". ''Tron'' is an American science fiction media franchise created by Steven Lisberger, which began with the eponymous 1982 film. A cult film or cult movie, also commonly referred to as a cult classic, is a film that has acquired a cult following. Cult films are known for their dedicated, passionate fanbase which forms an elaborate subculture, members of which engage in repeated viewings, dialogue-quoting, and audience participation. Inclusive definitions allow for major studio productions, especially box-office bombs, while exclusive definitions focus more on obscure, transgressive films shunned by the mainstream. ''Tron'' is a coin-operated arcade video game manufactured and distributed by Bally Midway in 1982. The game consists of four subgames inspired by the events of the Walt Disney Productions motion picture '' Tron'' released earlier in the summer. The lead programmer was Bill Adams. The music programmer was Earl Vickers. ''Tron'' was followed by a 1983 sequel, '' Discs of Tron'', which was not as successful. A number of other licensed ''Tron'' games were released for home systems, but these were based directly on elements of the movie and not the arcade game. Gameplay ''Tron'' consists of four sub-games based on events and characters in the movie. The 55th Academy Awards were presented April 11, 1983, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles. The ceremonies were presided over by Liza Minnelli, Dudley Moore, Richard Pryor, and Walter Matthau. The Academy Award for Best Sound is an Academy Award that recognizes the finest or most euphonic sound mixing, recording, sound design, and sound editing. The award used to go to the studio sound departments until a rule change in 1969 said it should be awarded to the specific technicians. Traditional animation (or classical animation, cel animation, or hand-drawn animation) is an animation technique in which each frame is drawing, drawn by hand. The technique was the dominant form of animation in cinema until computer animation.
