Tromsøysund Church
Tromsdalen Church or the Arctic Cathedral () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Tromsø Municipality in Troms county, Norway. It is located in the Tromsdalen valley on the east side of Tromsø. It is the church for the Tromsøysund parish, which is part of the Tromsø domprosti (arch-deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The modern concrete and metal church was built in a long church style in 1965 using plans drawn up by architect Jan Inge Hovig. The church seats about 600 people. Name The official name ''Tromsdalen Church'', the church is commonly nicknamed the ''Ishavskatedralen'' which means "The Cathedral of the Arctic Ocean," or simply the "Arctic Cathedral." Midnight Sun
Midnight sun, also known as polar day, is a natural phenomenon that occurs in the summer months in places north of the Arctic Circle or south of the Antarctic Circle, when the Sun remains visible at the local midnight. When midnight sun is seen in the Arctic, the Sun appears to move from left to right. In Antarctica, the equivalent apparent motion is from right to left. This occurs at latitudes ranging from approximately 65°44' to exactly 90° north or south, and does not stop exactly at the Arctic Circle or the Antarctic Circle, due to refraction. The opposite phenomenon, polar night, occurs in winter, when the Sun stays below the horizon throughout the day. Tromsø Bridge
The Tromsø Bridge () is a Cantilever bridge, cantilever road bridge in the Tromsø (city), city of Tromsø which is located in Tromsø Municipality in Troms county, Norway. It crosses the Tromsøysundet strait between Tromsdalen on the mainland and the island of Tromsøya. The bridge has 58 spans, of which the longest is with a maximum clearance to the sea of . History Construction began in 1958 and the bridge was opened in 1960. At the time of its opening, it was the longest bridge in Northern Europe, with a length of . Victor Sparre
Victor Sparre (né Smith; 4 November 1919 – 16 March 2008) was a Norwegian painter, glass designer and non-fiction writer. Personal life Sparre was born in Bærum as the son of librarian Victor Alf Smith and Eli Sparre. He was married to nurse Aase Marie Thomassen from 1955. Career Sparre studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry from 1936. He became a member of the Oxford Group. In 1938 he enrolled at the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts, and assisted Axel Revold making decorations for the Oslo City Hall. During the occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany he took part in resistance work and joined the Illegal Academy, underground art academy led by Axel Revold and Jean Heiberg, and later also joined the military resistance organization Milorg. Monrad Norderval
Monrad Oskar Norderval (1902–1976) was a Norwegian bishop in the Church of Norway. Norderval was born in Ålesund, Norway in 1902. He graduated with the cand.theol. degree in 1928 from the Royal Frederick University in Oslo. He began his ministry as an assistant pastor in Skjervøy Municipality in 1929. He then served as vicar in Tana Municipality from 1929–1935, in Ørsta Municipality from 1935–1948, Ålesund Municipality from 1948–1961, and was the bishop of the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland from 1961–1972. He also published poems, essay collections, and memoirs. He died in Ålesund in 1976. The Cathedral of Our Lady (), also commonly known as the Church of Our Lady, is the Catholic cathedral of the city of Tromsø, Norway, and seat of the Roman Catholic Territorial Prelature of Tromsø, prelature of the same name. It is the northernmost Catholic (and Christian in general) cathedral in the world. It is located on the Erling Bangsunds square. Description It is a small wooden church with room for about 150 seats. It was begun the same year as the Lutheran Cathedral of the city, in 1861, and shares with it the neogothic artistic style. Tromsø Cathedral
Tromsø Cathedral () is a cathedral of the Church of Norway located in the city of Tromsø in Tromsø Municipality in Troms county, Norway. The cathedral is the church for the ''Tromsø Domkirkens'' parish. It is the headquarters for the Tromsø domprosti (arch-deanery) and the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. This cathedral is notable since it is the only Norwegian Protestant cathedral made of wood. The yellow, wooden cathedral was built in a long church format and the Gothic Revival style in 1861 by the architect Christian Heinrich Grosch.
