''Trombolenium: Solo Trombone Improvisations 1986–1995'' is a live solo album by trombonist Paul Rutherford. It was recorded at various concerts in London and Noci, Italy, during 1986, 1992, 1993, and 1995, and was released in 2002 by Emanem Records. Reception In a review for AllMusic, François Couture wrote: "Rutherford's legendary playfulness and his relaxed attitude welcome listeners from the start. Throughout the album the trombonist demonstrates an extensive range of personal techniques that never take over the warmth and lyricism familiar to his music... Paul Rutherford (trombonist)
Paul William Rutherford (29 February 1940 – 5 August 2007) was an English free improvisation, free improvising trombonist. Biography Born in Greenwich, South East (London sub region), South East London, England, Rutherford initially played saxophone but switched to trombone. During the 1960s, he taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 1970, Rutherford, guitarist Derek Bailey (guitarist), Derek Bailey and bassist Barry Guy formed the improvising group Iskra 1903, which lasted until 1973. The formation was documented on a Iskra 1903, double album from Incus, later reissued with much bonus material on the three-CD set ''Chapter One'' (Emanem, 2000). A film soundtrack was separately released as ''Buzz Soundtrack''. Emanem Records is a record company and independent record label founded in London, England in 1974 by Martin Davidson and Madelaine Davidson to record free improvisation. Its headquarters moved to New York City (1975–76), New Jersey (1979, recordings released as Quark Records), Massachusetts (1979, recordings released as QED Records), and Sydney (1986–88), releasing about 25 records before returning to London in the 1990s and issuing compact discs. The First Full Turn
''The First Full Turn'' is a live album by the free improvisation group known as RoTToR, featuring trombonist Paul Rutherford, vocalist Julie Tippett, pianist Keith Tippett, and bassist Paul Rogers. The bulk of the album, a long quartet track, was recorded on April 30, 1998, at Theatre P Scarron in Le Mans, France. A remaining solo trombone track was recorded on February 6, 1998, at St Giles Cripplegate in London. The album was released by Emanem Records later that year. The group was originally a trio named RoToR, with the capital letters corresponding to the first letter of each player's last name. When Julie Tippett joined, the name was changed to RoTToR. Reception In a review for AllMusic, François Couture called the recording "beautiful," and praised "the chemistry between the Tippetts." ''Chicago 2002'' is a live album by trombonist Paul Rutherford. It was recorded on April 26 and 27, 2002, at The Empty Bottle in Chicago, and was released later that year by Emanem Records. The album features an extended Rutherford solo followed by three tracks on which he is joined by saxophonists Lol Coxhill and Mats Gustafsson, trombonist Jeb Bishop, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, bassist Kent Kessler, and percussionist Kjell Nordeson. Reception In a review for AllMusic, François Couture wrote: "Free improv albums rarely come as satisfying as this one," and, regarding the solo piece, stated that Rutherford is "in very good shape: inventive, resourceful, and absolutely capable of keeping an improvisation interesting for that long." Free jazz, or free form in the early to mid-1970s, is a style of avant-garde jazz or an experimental approach to jazz improvisation that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, when musicians attempted to change or break down jazz conventions, such as regular tempos, Musical tone, tones, and chord changes. ''The Gentle Harm of the Bourgeoisie'' is a live solo trombone album by Paul Rutherford, his first release under his own name. It was recorded at Unity Theatre, London during 1974, and was initially released on LP in 1976 by Emanem Records. In 1986, Emanem reissued the album on LP, and, in 1997, the label reissued it on CD with an additional track. According to the album liner notes, no "electronic trickery" was involved in the recording, and the only sounds that are heard involve "one man, a trombone and some mutes." Upon its release, the album, which features extensive use of extended techniques such as multiphonics, proved to be influential within the world of improvisers.
