Diodotus Tryphon
Diodotus Tryphon (, ''Diódotos Trýphōn''), nicknamed "The Magnificent" () was a Greek king of the Seleucid Empire. Initially an official under King Alexander I Balas, he led a revolt against Alexander's successor Demetrius II Nicator in 144 BC. He rapidly gained control of most of Syria and the Levant. At first, he acted as regent and tutor for Alexander's infant son Antiochus VI Dionysus, but after the death of his charge in 142/141 BC, Diodotus declared himself king. He took the royal name Tryphon Autocrator () and distanced himself from the Seleucid dynasty. For a period between 139 and 138, he was the sole ruler of the Seleucid empire. However, in 138 BC Demetrius II's brother Antiochus VII Sidetes invaded Syria and brought his rule to an end. Diodotus Tryphon is unique in the history of the Seleucid empire as the only rebel from outside the dynasty to gain control of the whole kingdom. Salvius Tryphon was an aulos player who was proclaimed king by the rebelling slaves of ancient Sicily during the Second Servile War against Rome. The Second Servile War In 104 BC the Consul Gaius Marius was recruiting soldiers (legionaries and Italian and foreign auxiliaries) for the war against the Cimbri and Teutones in Gaul. He requested support from King Nicomedes III of Bithynia and was refused, on the grounds that every able-bodied man in Bithynia had been enslaved by Roman tax-farmers for being unable to pay their dues. Trypho (; ) was a Christian theologian and Bible scholar of the 3rd century. He was a pupil of Origen. In Jerome's ''De viris illustribus'', he writes that Trypho wrote on the red heifer ( Numbers 19) and about the sacrifices offered by Abraham in Genesis 9. He may be the same Tryphon as is named as a martyr in the ''Acta Tryphonis'', who died in the Decian persecution Christians were persecuted in 250 AD under the Decius, Roman emperor Decius. Tryphon (Turkestanov)
Metropolitan Tryphon (; born Prince Boris Petrovich Turkestanov (Борис Петрович Туркестанов) November 29, 1861, Moscow — June 14, 1934) is a revered hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1901 he became the Bishop of Dmitrov and a vicar of the Moscow Eparchy. On February 26, 1915, Trifon was awarded the Panagia on the Ribbon of Saint George and the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky for the divine service on the fronts of World War I. After Metropolitan Sergius proclaimed the declaration of loyalty of the Church to the Soviet state on August 19, 1927, Trifon accepted the praying "to authorities", which has been added to the great ektenia. Turkestanov was a scion of the Georgian noble family Turkestanishvili. He first attended the Polivanov Classical Gymnasium, then entered the Moscow University.
