Trinity Square Video
Trinity Square Video (TSV) is an artist-run centre in Toronto, Canada. It is a space to re-imagine media art and is known for supporting the production and exhibition of video-based work at the intersection of art and technology. It was founded in 1971 in the basement of the Church of the Holy Trinity near Dundas Square before the development of the Eaton Centre forced it to move. It is currently situated at 401 Richmond St W. History Trinity Square Video was founded 1971 in the basement of the Toronto Church of the Holy Trinity by artists for the purpose of making video equipment easily accessible during the 1970s, a time when basic equipment was prohibitively expensive for independent artists. John Greyson
John Greyson (born March 13, 1960) is a Canadian director, writer, video artist, producer, and political activist, whose work frequently deals with queer characters and themes. He was part of a loosely-affiliated group of filmmakers to emerge in the 1980s from Toronto known as the Toronto New Wave. Greyson has won accolades and achieved critical success with his films—most notably '' Zero Patience'' (1993) and ''Lilies'' (1996). His outspoken persona, activism, and public image have also attracted international press and controversy. Lisa Steele
Lisa Steele D.Litt. (born 1947) is a Canadian artist, a pioneer in video art, educator, curator and co-founder of Vtape in Toronto. Born in the United States, Steele moved to Canada in 1968 and is now a Canadian citizen. She has collaborated exclusively with her partner Kim Tomczak since the early 1980s. Early life Steele was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1947 and immigrated to Canada in 1968. Her brother James B. Steele is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist located in Philadelphia. Jacqueline Hoang Nguyen
Jacqueline Hoàng Nguyễn (born 1979, Montreal, Quebec) is a Canadian-born artist currently living in Stockholm, Sweden. Her art practice is primarily research-based and often takes the form of installation, video, photographs and audio. She received her BFA from Concordia University (2003), her post-graduate diploma in Critical Studies from the Malmö Art Academy (2005) and is a graduate of the Whitney Independent Study Program. Themes Some of the themes that surface in Nguyen's work include resistance, power, and feminism. Kim Tomczak (born 1952) is a Canadian artist known for his work in performance art, photography and video art. Born in Victoria, British Columbia in 1952, he graduated from the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design) in 1975. Tomczak has collaborated exclusively with his partner Lisa Steele since the early 1980s. Vera Frenkel
Vera Frenkel D. Litt (born November 10, 1938) is a Canadian multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto. Her installations, videotapes, performances and new media projects address the forces at work in human migration, the learning and unlearning of cultural memory, and the ever-increasing bureaucratization of experience. Vera Frenkel was born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, lived in England during her childhood and resided in Canada for her adult life. Frenkel graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from McGill University in 1959, then pursued further studies in Montreal under Arthur Lismer and Albert Dumouchel. Barbara Sternberg (born in 1945) is a Canadian film director known for her experimental films. Sternberg directed films such as ''Opus 40'' (1979), ''Transitions'' (1982), ''At Present'' (1990), ''Through and Through'' (1992), and ''Midst'' (1997). Early life Sternberg was born in Toronto, Ontario on April 24, 1945. In her youth, she created art by writing books for her family members. Sternberg said that her use of photos and text in these books is "similar to the way I work now." She created her first film using her father's 16 mm camera in order to make a gift for her husband. Canadian artist-run centres (ARC or ARCs) are galleries and art spaces developed by artists in Canada since the 1960s. Artist-run centre is the common term of use for artist-initiated and managed organizations in Canada. Most centres follow the not-for-profit arts organization model, do not charge admission fees, pay artists for their contributions (exhibitions, presentations, performances) are non-commercial and de-emphasize the selling of artwork.
