''Trimmed in Scarlet'' is a 1923 American silent drama film directed by Jack Conway and produced and distributed by Universal Pictures. It is based on the 1920 Broadway play, ''Trimmed in Scarlet'', by William Hurlbut and starring Broadway's Maxine Elliott. This play marked the last time Maxine Elliott appeared on Broadway. Her role in the film is played by veteran cinema star Kathlyn Williams. All prints of this film are believed lost. Hugh Ryan "Jack" Conway (July 17, 1886 – October 11, 1952) was an American film director and film producer, as well as an actor of many films in the first half of the 20th century. Conway and director Edmund Goulding share the distinction of directing the most Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Picture-nominated films without ever being nominated for Academy Award for Best Director, Best Director, with three apiece. Conway's nominated films were ''Viva Villa!'', ''A Tale of Two Cities'', and ''Libeled Lady''. Conway was one of a team of MGM contract directors, who forsook any pretense to a specific individual style in favor of working within the strictures set forth by studio management. Wendell Phillips Smalley (August 7, 1865 – May 2, 1939) was an American silent film director and actor. Biography Born in Brooklyn, New York (state), New York, he was the grandson of Wendell Phillips; he was the son of George Washburn Smalley, a war correspondent, and his wife Phoebe Garnaut, adopted by Phillips. He enrolled at Balliol College, Oxford in 1886. Smalley began his career in vaudeville and acted in more than 200 films between 1910 and his death in 1939. Raymond Hatton
Raymond William Hatton (July 7, 1887 – October 21, 1971) was an American film actor who appeared in almost 500 motion pictures. Biography Hatton was born in Red Oak, Iowa. His physician father steered him toward a career in medicine. However, Hatton had become enamored of being on stage after he acted in a school play, and he left home to go into acting as a career. Hatton was part of a vaudeville act that went to Hollywood in 1911. There, he established a successful silent film career, including a stint being paired in 1920s comedies with Wallace Beery. During the sound era, though, his career soon skidded and he usually played smaller supporting roles, including the tobacco-chewing, rowdy character Rusty Joslin in '' The Three Mesquiteers'' Western B picture series.
