Triangular Screen
''Triangular Screen'' is a live album by Tony Oxley Project 1, led by percussionist Oxley, and featuring guitarist Ivar Grydeland and double bassist Tonny Kluften. One track was recorded during March 2000 at the Kongsberg Jazzfestival in Kongsberg, Norway, and the remaining tracks were recorded during May 2000 at Blå in Oslo, Norway. The album was released later that year by the Norwegian Sofa label. Reception In a review for AllMusic, François Couture stated: "Anyone familiar with the drummer's recordings with Derek Bailey will feel at home here... Oxley leads throughout. Tony Oxley
Tony Oxley (born 15 June 1938) is an English free improvising drummer and one of the founders of Incus Records. Biography Oxley was born in Sheffield, England. A self-taught pianist by the age of eight, he first began playing the drums at seventeen. In Sheffield he was taught by Haydon Cook, who had returned to the city after a long residency in the 1950s at Ronnie Scott's in London. While in the Black Watch military band from 1957 to 1960, he studied music theory and improved his drumming technique. From 1960 to 1964 he led a quartet which performed locally in England. In 1963, he began working with Gavin Bryars and guitarist Derek Bailey, in a trio known as Joseph Holbrooke. Oxley moved to London in 1966 and became house drummer at Ronnie Scott's, where he accompanied visiting musicians such as Joe Henderson, Lee Konitz, Charlie Mariano, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, and Bill Evans until the early 1970s. Kongsberg Jazz Festival or Kongsberg Jazzfestival is an international jazz festival that has been held annually in Kongsberg, Norway, since 1964. Artists Several worldwide great artists have visited Kongsberg during this festival; international stars including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Nigel Kennedy, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, McCoy Tyner, Radka Toneff, Bobby McFerrin, John Butcher, Anthony Braxton, Diana Krall and Pat Metheny have played in Kongsberg several times. Blå ("Blue") is a jazz club in Grünerløkka, Oslo, Norway. Blå opened on February 28, 1998; the initiators were Kjell Einar Karlsen and Martin Revheim. Free improvisation or free music is improvised music without any rules beyond the logic or inclination of the musician(s) involved. The term can refer to both a technique (employed by any musician in any genre) and as a recognizable genre in its own right. ''Digger's Harvest'' is a live album by pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach and drummer Tony Oxley. It was recorded on November 5 and 7, 1998, at the Podewil in Berlin, and was released in 1999 by FMP/Free Music Production. Reception In a review for AllMusic, Steve Loewy stated that the album "find both of these marvelous musicians in fine form, the energy level rarely abating," and wrote: "Unobtrusive, yet continuously creative, Oxley is the Max Roach of free jazz. When paired with von Schlippenbach, the results can be -- as they are here -- a successful integration of continuous invention and refined sensibility." Ivar Grydeland
Ivar Grydeland (born 1 October 1976) is a Norwegian jazz musician (guitar) and composer raised in Kongsberg. Career Grydeland was born in Trondheim, Norway, and studied jazz guitar at the Norwegian Academy of Music (1996–2000, and 2001–2003). He started his jazz career in the Big Band 'Ung Musikk' in 1995. He collaborates within the band Huntsville (six albums) together with Tonny Kluften and Ingar Zach, within 'Dans les arbres' (two albums) together with Christian Wallumrød, Xavier Charles and Ingar Zach, and plays with Hanne Hukkelberg. Grydeland plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar and banjo with a mixture of finger picking technique, various types of bows, metal, propellers and electronic devices, he teaches at Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, and runs the record label Sofa. Its website launched in 1997, and an online archive of its entire back catalog became available to subscribers in 2013.
