Trianel Windpark Borkum
Trianel Windpark Borkum (formerly Borkum West II) is an offshore wind farm near Borkum. Its first phase of 40 turbines rated at a total capacity of 200 MW is operational, with a planned, additional 200 MW in a second phase. The project was approved for construction in 2008 and will cost over €1 billion to construct once fully operational (€900m for phase I alone). Originally known as Borkum West II the name was changed to Trianel Windpark Borkum in early 2013. Phase 1 of the installation was completed in the 4th quarter of 2014 and consist of 40 Areva M5000-116 turbines (5 MW turbines) on Tripod foundations. It was connected to the grid in August 2015. In the six months before March 2016 the wind farm produced 452.33 GWh, i.e. a capacity factor of 51.6%. Adwen GmbH (now Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy Deutschland GmbH ) is an offshore wind service company headquartered in Bremerhaven, Germany. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Spanish-German company Siemens Gamesa. Previously the company designed, assembled, and installed 5-Megawatt wind turbines for offshore wind farms. It also designed and manufactured rotor blades through its subsidiary Adwen Blades GmbH, headquartered in Stade, Germany. Borkum
Borkum (; ) is an island and a municipality in the Leer District in Lower Saxony, northwestern Germany. It is situated east of Rottumeroog and west of Juist. Geography Borkum is bordered to the west by the Westerems strait (which forms the border with the Netherlands), to the east by the Osterems strait, to the north by the North Sea, and to the south by the Wadden Sea. It is the largest and westernmost of the East Frisian Islands in the North Sea, due north of the Dutch province of Groningen. However, for large turbines and higher water depth, the cost disadvantage might be compensated when durability is also taken into account. Capacity Factor
The net capacity factor is the unitless ratio of actual electrical energy output over a given period of time to the theoretical maximum electrical energy output over that period. The theoretical maximum energy output of a given installation is defined as that due to its continuous operation at full nameplate capacity over the relevant period. HVDC DolWin1
HVDC DolWin1 is a high voltage direct current link built to transmit offshore wind power to the power grid of the German mainland. The project differs from most HVDC systems in that one of the two converter stations is built on a platform in the sea. Voltage-Sourced Converters are used and the total cable length is 165 km. The project was built by ABB and was handed over to its owner, TenneT, in July 2015, the fifth such project to be completed in Germany in 2015. Context DolWin1 is part of an ambitious programme of providing grid connections to offshore wind parks off the coast of Germany, in the German Bight, as part of the German Energiewende (Energy Transition) programme.
