On 31 May 2023, a Dresden court found 28-year-old far-left extremist Lina Engel guilty of six acts of violence including attempted murder against Neo-Nazism, neo-Nazi individuals, and sentenced her to five years and three months of imprisonment. Three co-defendants (Lennart A., Jonathan Philipp M., and Jannis R.) were charged with her and received shorter sentences. Background During the early 2020s, links between the German state and the far-right have attracted significant controversy, such as the 2022 German coup d'état plot by the Reichsbürger movement, where several of those arrested for the plot were active military personnel, and the case of Jens Maier, a designated far-right extremist who had applied to become a judge in 2022. The Higher Regional Court of Dresden (; abbreviated: ') is the Oberlandesgericht, Higher Regional Court of Saxony. History The Oberlandesgericht, Higher Regional Court was established on 1 October 1879, replacing the 1835 established Oberappellationsgericht (High Court of Appeal). In 1945, it's building, the "''Landgerichtsgebäude Pillnitzer Straße''" was destroyed during the bombing of Dresden in World War II. In 1952, the court was dissolved due to a law established by East Germany, stating that the courts jurisdiction would be replaced with the Supreme Court of East Germany. On 1 January 1993, the Higher Regional Court of Dresden was re-established. The Higher Regional Court of Dresden is responsible for the special unit for judicial officers in Saxony, SGO, which was set up in 2019. It protects courts in dangerous trials throughout Saxony.
