Treschows Stiftelse (Christianshavn
Treschows Stiftelse is a listed, philanthropical housing complex in the Christianshavn district of Copenhagen, Denmark. History The site was one of two homes for needy women which were built by the politician and supreme court attorney Frederik Treschow (1786–1869), Frederik Treschow. He administrated numerous trusts, including Admiral Winterfeldts Stiftelse "Trøstens Bolig" which provided affordable housing for needy women. This may have inspired him to build similar facilities at his own expense. The first was built in the courtyard behind the Admiral building in 1847. The next was built in Christianshavn and consisted of two buildings completed in 1853 and 1857 to designs by Christian Tybjerg. Christianshavn () is a neighbourhood in Copenhagen, Denmark. Part of the Indre By District, it is located on several artificial islands between the islands of Zealand and Amager and separated from the rest of the city centre by the Inner Harbour, Copenhagen, Inner Harbour. It was founded in the early 17th century by Christian IV of Denmark, Christian IV as part of his extension of the fortifications of Copenhagen (17th century), fortifications of Copenhagen. Frederik Treschow (1786–1869)
Frederik Wilhelm Treschow (noble family), Treschow (15 September 1786 – 2 April 1869). also known as Willum Frederik Treschow (his name at birth), or simply as Frederik Treschow, was a Denmark, Danish supreme court attorney, politician, landowner and philanthropist. He founded Treschows Stiftelse in Copenhagen. He was the younger brother of Herman Gerhardt Treschow. Early life and education Frederik Treschow was born in Copenhagen to Supreme Court justice Michael Treschow (judge), Michael Treschow (1741–1816) and Christina E. Wasserfall (1753–1823). He graduated from Roskilde Cathedral School in Roskilde in 1803 after initially attending the Metropolitanskolen, Metropolitan School in Copenhagen. He studied law at the University of Copenhagen under the guidance of Anders Sandøe Ørsted and graduated in 1806. Christianshavns Kanal
Christianshavns Kanal ( English: Christianshavn Canal) is a canal in the Christianshavn neighbourhood of Copenhagen, Denmark. Running northeast–southwest, it bisects the neighbourhood along its length. To the north it connects to Trangraven, the canal which separates Christianshavn from Holmen; to the south it makes an angular break and empties in the main harbour a little north of the Langebro bridge. At the middle, Christianshavns Kanal is crossed by Børnehusbroen. This bridge is part of Torvegade, the main thoroughfare of Christianshavn, connecting the city centre across Knippelsbro to the northwest to Amager the southeast. The only other bridge traversing the canal is Snorrebroen, located further north. Jørgen Balthazar Winterfeldt
Jørgen Balthazar Winterfeldt (1 October 1732 22 July 1821) was a Danish naval officer and philanthropist. He was admiral from 1804 and was awarded the Order of the Elephant in 1811. He established Winterfeldts Stiftelse at Klerkegade 25 in Copenhagen in 1805. He was chief of the Naval Cadet Academy from 1782 until 1792. Early life Winterfeldt was born in Fredericia, the son of lieutenant ved Erik Winterfeldt (1697-1741) and Nille Winterfeldt née Dalhoff (1701-52). Career Winterfeldt served as page for Countess Reventlow in 1742 and became a cadet in 1743, Ge became a second lieutenant in 1753. In 1755-56, he served onboard the frigate ''Christiansborg'' on a voyage to the Danish West Indies. In 1757, he served on ''Nellebladet'' as part of a Danish-Swedish squadron in the North Sea.
