Tres Quebradas Airport
Tres Quebradas Airport (, ) is an extremely high elevation airport serving mining operations in the Atacama Region of Chile, near the Argentina border. The runway is in the narrow valley of the Del Tránsito River, an eventual tributary of the Huasco River. Due to mountain elevations over to the east, a high terrain escape route Skybrary must be northwest, down the valley. The narrowness of the valley leaves little room for course reversal. Alto Del Carmen
Alto del Carmen is a Chilean commune and village in Huasco Province, Atacama Region. The commune spans an area of . The commune has an economy based on agriculture, in particular grapes for pisco, and mining. The discovery of valuable black marble in the commune was announced on January 2025. Demographics According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, Alto del Carmen had 4,840 inhabitants (2,629 men and 2,211 women), making the commune an entirely rural area. The population grew by 2% (95 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses. The 2024 census showed that the commune is both the poorest and the one with the oldest population (average age 43 years) in Atacama Region. As of 2024 a third of the homes in the commune lacks one of more of the following; electricity connection, sewage system or potable water. Huasco River
Huasco River is a river of Chile located in the Huasco Province, Atacama Region. Its headwaters in the upper catchments in high-altitude Andes glaciers are the Estrecho River, a tributary of El Tránsito River (catchment area 4,135 km2), and Potrerillos River, a tributary of El Carmen River (catchment area 2 890 km2). The Huasco River begins at the confluence of El Tránsito River and El Carmen River which is located in Junta del Carmen (790ma.s.l.). A small portion of its course is impounded by a dam forming the Embalse Santa Juana. Cities and towns along the Huasco include: Vallenar, Freirina and Huasco.
