Tres (instrument)
The tres (Spanish language, Spanish for ''three'') is a three-Course (music), course chordophone of Cuban origin. The most widespread variety of the instrument is the original Cuban tres with six strings. Its sound has become a defining characteristic of the son cubano, Cuban son and it is commonly played in a variety of Afro-Cuban genres. In the 1930s, the instrument was adapted into the Puerto Rican tres, which has nine strings and a body similar to that of the Puerto Rican cuatro, cuatro. The tres developed in the second half of the 19th century in the eastern region of Guantánamo Province, Guantánamo, where it was used to play changüí, a precursor of son cubano. Its exact origins are not known, but it is assumed to have developed from the 19th century Classical guitar, Spanish guitar, which it resembles in shape, as well as the laúd and bandola, two instruments used in punto cubano since at least the 18th century. Tres playing revolves around the ''guajeo'', an ''ostinato ...

Foucault's Pendulum
''Foucault's Pendulum'' (original title: ''Il pendolo di Foucault'' ) is a novel by Italian writer and philosopher Umberto Eco. It was first published in 1988, with an English translation by William Weaver being published a year later. The book is divided into segments represented by the ten Sefiroth. It is satirical, being full of esoteric references to Kabbalah, alchemy, and conspiracy theories, to the point that critic and novelist Anthony Burgess suggested that it needed an index. The pendulum of the title refers to an actual pendulum designed by French physicist Léon Foucault to demonstrate Earth's rotation, which has symbolic significance within the novel. Some believe that it refers to Michel Foucault, given the author's friendship with him, but Eco "specifically rejects any intentional reference to Michel Foucault"—this being regarded as another subtle literary joke. Plot summary The book opens with a man named Casaubon hiding in the Musée des Arts et Métiers ...

Tres (poetry Collection)
''Tres'' is a collection of poems by the Chilean author Roberto Bolaño, originally published in Spanish in 2000 and scheduled to be published in a bilingual edition in September 2011, translated into English by Laura Healy. The collection is composed of three sections: * “Prose from Autumn in Gerona” - a series of film songs in prose that slowly reveals a subtle and emotional story about unrequited love. * “The Neochileans” - a travel narrative in verse concerned with a young band on tour in the far reaches of Chile. It's a kind of "On the Road" in lyrics. * “A Stroll Through Literature” - a series of short poems. This poems reminds us of Bolaño's great ability to walk the line between the seriously comic and the comically serious. A selection of 16 poems from the book was published in BOMB Magazine in March 2011.
