Avalon Peninsula
The Avalon Peninsula () is a large peninsula that makes up the southeast portion of the island of Newfoundland in Canada. It is in size. The peninsula is home to 270,348 people, about 52% of the province's population, according to the 2016 Canadian census. The peninsula is the location of St. John's, the provincial capital and largest city. It is connected to the main section of the island by the wide Isthmus of Avalon. The peninsula protrudes into the rich fishing zones near the Grand Banks. Trepassey
Trepassey () is a small fishing community located in Trepassey Bay on the south eastern corner of the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador. It was in Trepassey Harbour where the flight of the ''Friendship'' took off, with Amelia Earhart on board, the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. History Trepassey originates from the French word trépassés (''dead men''), named after Baie des Trépassés on the Brittany coast of France. It is believed that it acquired this name due to the many shipwrecks that have occurred off its coast. Trepassey is the name of the harbour, the bay and the community. Later the translation was used as 'Dead Man's Bay' due to the tragic shipwrecks along the coast. Alternatively, the 'tre' element of the name could come from the Welsh word for 'town', explained by the Welsh influence of the Vaughan family. Biscay Bay
Biscay Bay is a local service district in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Origin of Name This name appears as early as 1675 in The English Pilot, a guide to navigation. At the time, Basques were called "Biscayans", and the bay was used by the early Basque fishermen. History There is very little known about Biscay Bay before 1845, but most of the land area of Biscay Bay was owned by William D. Jackson, an English merchant, when Thomas Ryan of Trepassey (originally from Ireland) went to live there in that year. Other families at the time were the Easemans and Whites. Geography Biscay Bay is in Newfoundland within Subdivision V of Division No. 1. Baie des Trépassés (, ), or the Bay of the Dead, is a bay on Cap Sizun on the west coast of Finistère, in Brittany, France. The bay is located between Pointe du Raz and Pointe du Van, on the territory of the commune of Plogoff. The bay has a wide sandy beach, and is a popular surfing location. The name appears to be derived from a misinterpretation of the Breton , meaning "river", for , meaning "the dead".
