Treadwell Mansion
Treadwell Mansion and Carriage House, is a historic mansion with carriage house built in in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland, California, U.S.. With The two buildings used to be part of the campus for California College of the Arts, from 1922 until 2022. The Treadwell Mansion and Carriage House has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since July 15, 1977; listed as a California Historical Landmark since July 15, 1977; and listed as an Oakland Designated Landmark under the name "Treadwell Hall" since August 5, 1975. It is also known as the James Treadwell Mansion, Treadwell Hall, and Macky Hall. History The mansion was built for John Treadwell and James Treadwell, owners of the Tesla Coal Mine in Alameda County. California College of the Arts (CCA) is a private art school in San Francisco, California. It was founded in Berkeley, California in 1907 and moved to a historic estate in Oakland, California in 1922. In 1996 it opened a second campus in San Francisco; in 2022, the Oakland campus was closed and merged into the San Francisco campus. CCA enrolls approximately 1,239 undergraduates and 380 graduate students. Clinton Day (March 17, 1847 – January 11, 1916) was an American architect, active on the West Coast of the United States, West Coast of the United States. Biography Day was born on March 17, 1847, in Brooklyn, New York City; and he moved to California when 8 years old. His grandfather, Jeremiah Day, was president of Yale University, and his father, Sherman Day, was surveyor-general of California and one of the founders of the College of California, predecessor to the University of California, Berkeley. Day graduated from the College of California in 1868, and received his MA degree from the same institution in 1874. (He later received an honorary LLD from the college in 1910.) Frederick Heinrich Wilhelm Meyer
Frederick Heinrich Wilhelm Meyer (November 6, 1872 – January 6, 1961) was a designer and art educator prominent in the Arts and Crafts Movement. He was a long-time resident of the San Francisco Bay Area. Early years Meyer was born near Hamelin, Germany, on November 6, 1872 into a family whose occupations were dominated by furniture craftsmen and weavers. He apprenticed as a cabinetmaker before he immigrated in 1888 to Fresno, California, where he worked in a large commercial nursery. In about 1890, he enrolled at the Cincinnati Technical School and two years later transferred to the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art. On November 7, 1893 he became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America. In the spring of 1895 he traveled to Germany, completed the program at the Royal Academy of Berlin for Fine Arts and Mechanical Sciences (aka Prussian Academy of Arts), and returned to the Pennsylvania Museum School, where he was awarded a master's degree.
