Transporte Urbano
Transporte Urbano is a rock group from the Dominican Republic . History Transporte Urbano was founded by the Dominican composer Luis Días, in 1982, after he returned from a temporary stay in New York City. Días, a pioneer of Dominican urban folk music and one of the founders of the folk group Convite, wanted to create Dominican music with a new vision of what it could be. This arose from his contact with punk and other rock expressions while living in New York City in the early 1980s and led to the birth of Transporte Urbano. Días chose a few young, Santo Domingo-based musicians for this project: Juan Francisco Ordóñez on electric guitar, Guy Frómeta on drums, Héctor Santana on bass (later replaced by Peter Nova), Bruno Ranson on sax and percussionist José Duluc. Luis Días (Composer)
Luis Díaz Portorreal, best known as Luis Días, was a musician, composer and performer of popular music born in the Dominican Republic. He was immersed in the popular music and customs of Dominican folklore. In the artistic realms he is known as "El Terror" (''"The Terror"''), due to his particular performance style and his overtones. He was the author of lyrics and music that fused many diverse musical styles. In some circles, Luis was considered to be the Father of Dominican Rock, due to his contributions to alternative music and his experimentation with Dominican rhythms blended with rock guitar patterns. Juan Francisco Ordóñez
Juan Francisco Ordóñez (born 4 October 1961) is a guitarist from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. His music combines blues, rock, and jazz. Career Ordóñez graduated high school from Colegio Dominicano De la Salle and later earned a degree in economics from the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo. He began his guitar studies with Blas Carrasco and later continued on his own. He learned formal music composition from Sonia de Piña at the Dominican National Conservatory. From 1976 to 1977, he took part in the folk group Convite. In the early 1980s, he and Luis Días formed the rock group Transporte Urbano. Ordóñez was Transporte Urbano's lead guitarist for almost 25 years. In 1985, Ordóñez traveled to Moscow in the old U.S.S.R., performing several concerts with Patricia Pereira and Luís Días. Merengue Music
Merengue is a type of music and dance originating in the Dominican Republic, which has become a very popular genre throughout Latin America, and also in several major cities in the United States with Latino communities. Merengue was inscribed on November 30, 2016 in the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO. Merengue was developed in the middle of the 1800s, originally played with European stringed instruments ( bandurria and guitar). Years later, the stringed instruments were replaced by the accordion, thus conforming, together with the güira and the tambora, the instrumental structure of the typical merengue ensemble. This set, with its three instruments, represents the synthesis of the three cultures that made up the idiosyncrasy of Dominican culture. Pablo Milanés Arias (24 February 1943 – 22 November 2022) was a Cuban guitar player and singer. He was one of the founders of the Cuban nueva trova, along with Silvio Rodríguez and Noel Nicola. His music, originating in the Trova, Son and other traditional styles of early 20th Century Cuban music, set him apart from the style of Silvio Rodríguez.
