Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council
Trafford Council, or Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council, is the Local government in England, local authority of the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford in Greater Manchester, England. It is a metropolitan borough council and provides the majority of local government services in the borough. The council has been a member of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority since 2011. The council has been under Labour Party (UK), Labour majority control since 2019. It is based at Trafford Town Hall in Stretford. History The Metropolitan Borough of Trafford and its council were created in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 as one of ten metropolitan districts within the new metropolitan county of Greater Manchester. 2024 Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council Election
The 2024 Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council elections were held on 2 May 2024 alongside other local elections in the United Kingdom and the 2024 Greater Manchester mayoral election. One third of the 63 seats were contested, with each successful candidate elected to serve a four-year term of office expiring in 2028. Following the election the Labour Party retained control of the authority, increasing their share of the Council's seats; the Party gaining two seats from the Conservative Party in Broadheath ward and Manor ward. Turnout during the election saw 41% of the electorate using their vote; representing the highest voter turnout of a local authority area in Greater Manchester. 1973 Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council Election
The first elections to Trafford Council were held on Thursday, 10 May 1973. This was a new council created to replace the following authorities: the Municipal Borough of Altrincham, the Municipal Borough of Sale, the Municipal Borough of Stretford, Bowdon Urban District, Hale Urban District, Urmston Urban District, and parts of Bucklow Rural District. This election would create the entire 63-member council (3 councillors to each ward), which would shadow its predecessor councils before taking over their functions on 1 April 1974, as specified in the Local Government Act 1972. Each 1st-placed candidate would serve a five-year term of office, expiring in 1978. Each 2nd-placed candidate would serve a three-year term of office, expiring in 1976. Bucklow Rural District
Bucklow Rural District was, from 1894 to 1974, a local government district in the north of the administrative county of Cheshire, England. Following the Local Government Act 1972, this rural district was split between the new Greater Manchester boroughs of Trafford and Manchester, and Macclesfield, which was retained in Cheshire. Knutsford was an enclave and independent urban district surrounded by Bucklow RD, as was Altrincham until it expanded enough to link up with other districts in the north. The district was formed in 1894 based on Altrincham rural sanitary district by the Local Government Act 1894. It was known as the Altrincham Rural District until 1895. Bowdon is a suburb of Altrincham and electoral ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. It lies within the historic county boundaries of Cheshire, and became part of Greater Manchester in 1974. History The name Bowdon came from Anglo-Saxon ''Boga-dūn'' = "bow (weapon)-hill" or "curved hill". Bowdon and nearby Dunham Massey are both mentioned in the Domesday Book, citing the existence of a church and a mill in Bowdon, and Dunham Massey is identified as ''Doneham: Hamo de Mascy''. Both areas came under Hamo de Masci in Norman times. His base was a wooden castle at Dunham. In England and Wales, an urban district was a type of local government district that covered an urbanised area. Urban districts had an elected urban district council (UDC), which shared local government responsibilities with a county council. In England and Wales, urban districts and rural districts were created in 1894 by the Local Government Act 1894 ( 56 & 57 Vict. c. 73) as subdivisions of administrative counties. A similar model of urban and rural districts was also established in Ireland in 1899, which continued separately in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland after 1921. Municipal Borough Of Altrincham
Altrincham was an administrative district covering the town of Altrincham in Cheshire, England. It was a local board district from 1851 to 1894, an urban district from 1894 to 1937, and a municipal borough from 1937 until 1974. It was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, and the area became a part of the new Metropolitan Borough of Trafford in Greater Manchester. History The town of Altrincham had been a seigneurial borough from 1290, with a limited degree of self-governance whilst remaining under the jurisdiction of the lord of the manor.
