Tracy Chapman
Tracy Chapman (born March 30, 1964) is an American singer-songwriter, widely known for her hit singles " Fast Car" (1988) and " Give Me One Reason" (1995). She was signed to Elektra Records by Bob Krasnow in 1987. The following year she released her debut album, '' Tracy Chapman'', which became a commercial success, boosted by her appearance at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert, and was certified 6× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album received six Grammy Award nominations, including one for Album of the Year, three of which she won: Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her single "Fast Car", and Best Contemporary Folk Album. It is the second compilation of her career, following '' Collection'' from 2001, and the first available in the United States. All tracks were chosen by Chapman herself. ''Our Bright Future'' is the eighth studio album by American singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman, released on November 11, 2008 via Elektra. The album was co-produced by Larry Klein, with the album's first single "Sing For You" being released digitally on October 31, 2008. In promotion for this album, Chapman appeared on radio stations across Europe with interviews and sessions. Chapman also performed "Sing for You" on ''The Tonight Show with Jay Leno''. A European tour in support of the disc took place through November and December 2008. A US tour was planned for January 2009 but was postponed. Chapman toured Europe again in the Summer of 2009. ''Our Bright Future'' was certified Platinum in France, selling more than 200,000 copies there. It also was certified Gold in Switzerland, for sales in excess of 15,000. ''Telling Stories'' is the fifth album by American singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman, released on February 14, 2000, by Elektra Records. A two-disc special edition was released in Europe in 2000. The album is composed of contemporary rock songs in the first half, and folk songs in the second half. The record marked a return to shorter songs for Tracy; on ''New Beginning'' they had been somewhat longer. ''New Beginning'' is the fourth album by singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman, released in 1995. According to Nielsen Soundscan, it is her biggest-selling recording since 1991, with 3.8 million copies sold, and according to the RIAA, it has shipped five million copies in the United States. The album's sound consists of Chapman's trademark acoustic folk-rock sound and is mainly made up of slow low-key tunes and a few upbeat tracks. One notable exception is the hit " Give Me One Reason", which is a blues piece.
