Trachyphylliidae
Merulinidae is a family of reef-building stony corals. Characteristics All the genera in this family are colonial, reef-building corals. Skeletal structures are similar to those of Faviidae but are highly fused, without paliform lobes. The valleys are superficial or may be indistinct because of fan-like spreading or contortions in the ridges. Faviidae and Trachyphylliidae are the most closely related families. Genera The World Register of Marine Species includes these genera in the family: *'' Astrea'' Lamarck, 1801 *'' Australogyra'' Veron & Pichon, 1982 *'' Boninastrea'' Yabe & Sugiyama, 1935 *''Caulastraea'' Dana, 1846 *'' Coelastrea'' Verrill, 1866 *''Cyphastrea ''Cyphastrea'' is a genus of massive reef building stony corals in the family Merulinidae, commonly known as brain coral. Orbicella
''Orbicella'' is a genus of stony corals in the Merulinidae family. The Orbicella species complex comprises three sister species, namely '' Orbicella faveolata'', '' Orbicella annularis'' and '' Orbicella franksi'', all of which are shallow-water, zooxanthellate species and are native to the tropical western Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. These corals are ubiquitous and major reef-builders in the Caribbean. Their similar colony morphologies misled scientists to historically lump them into a single species, ''Montastraea annularis'', which included three morphotypes “bumpy”, “columnar” and “massive”. These growth forms were believed to arise as a response to abiotic factors (e.g., depth, light availability). This taxonomic classification was challenged by further ecological, reproductive, genetic, and morphologic evidence, which led to the re-description of three separate species, ''Montastraea faveolata'' (massive), ''M. annularis'' (columna ...

Merulina
''Merulina'' is a genus of Scleractinia, stony corals in the family (biology), family Merulinidae. Members of this genus are native to the Indo-Pacific region and their ranges extend from the Red Sea through the Indian Ocean as far as Japan and the southern central Pacific Ocean. ''Merulina ampliata'' is the type species. Characteristics Colonies can be laminar, foliose, columnar or arborescent, and can adopt all of these forms in a single colony. On laminar plates, valleys radiate from the centre, becoming contorted on branching structures. Species The following species are currently recognized by the World Register of Marine Species : *''Merulina ampliata'' (Ellis & Solander, 1786) *†''Merulina isseli'' (Prever, 1922) *''Merulina rotunda'' Nemenzo, 1959 *''Merulina scabricula'' Dana, 1846 *''Merulina scheeri'' Head, 1983 *''Merulina triangularis'' (Veron & Pichon, 1980) References
