Toyota International Series
The Toyota International Series was a professional women's tennis circuit administered by the Women's Tennis Association that was founded in 1977 as the Colgate International Series it consisted of tournaments absorbed from the ILTF Women's International Grand Prix and included all those worldwide events that were not part of the Virginia Slims Circuit whose tournaments were mainly in the United States. In 1979 it was renamed as the Colgate Series. In 1981 the Toyota Motor Corporation took over sponsorship of the circuit from the Colgate-Palmolive Company where it resumed under its last title name until 1982. The circuits seasonal finales were known as the Colgate Series Championships then later the Toyota Championships. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) is the principal organizing body of women's professional tennis. The association governs the WTA Tour, which is the worldwide professional tennis tour for women, and was founded to create a better future for women's tennis. The WTA's corporate headquarters is in St. Petersburg, Florida, with its European headquarters in London and its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Beijing. The Carolinas International Tennis Tournament, also known by its sponsored name North Carolina National Bank Tennis Classic, was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1965. The Australian Open (stylized ΛO) is a tennis tournament organised by Tennis Australia annually at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria (state), Victoria, Australia. The Pan Pacific Open, currently sponsored by Toray Industries, is a women's outdoor hardcourt tennis tournament held annually in Tokyo, Japan. It is a WTA 500-level tournament. History The tournament was first held in 1973 as the Toray Sillook Championships. In 1976, the name was changed to the ''Sillook Open'' in Tokyo. In 1982 it was renamed the ''TV Championships'' and in 1983, it changed yet again to the ''Queens Grand Prix''. Its current name, the ''Pan Pacific Open'', was designated in 1984 and had traditionally been played on indoor carpet at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. The Italian Open () is an annual professional tennis tournament held in Rome, Italy. It is played on clay courts at the Foro Italico, and is held during the second week of May. The tournament is part of the ATP 1000 events on the ATP Tour and part of the WTA 1000 events on the WTA Tour. The two events were combined in 2011.
