Toxic 100
The Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) is an independent research unit at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. According to its mission statement, it "...promotes human and ecological well-being through our original research". PERI was established in 1998 by co-directors Robert Pollin and Gerald Epstein, both economists at the university. Funding for its foundation came from Pollin and his businessman father, Abe Pollin. Toxic 100 PERI's Toxic 100 list includes one hundred United States companies ranked by the amount of greenhouse gases, air pollution and water pollution produced and the relative toxicity of the pollutants, as determined by PERI at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The Greenhouse 100 Index ranks companies by 2019 direct emissions from large sources. Robert Pollin
Robert Pollin (born September 29, 1950) is an American economist and professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he is also founding co-director of its Political Economy Research Institute (PERI). Pollin received his PhD in economics from the New School for Social Research in 1982. He has worked as a consultant for the U.S. Department of Energy, the International Labour Organization, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and United Nations Development Program. He has also worked as an advisor to US Senator Bernie Sanders. Pollin has published several books on topics in public economics, such as inequality, financial regulation and public welfare. Gerald Epstein
Gerald N. Epstein (November 6, 1935 – February 18, 2019) was an American psychiatrist who used mental imagery and other mental techniques to treat physical and emotional problems. An author and a researcher, he was the founder and director of a mental imagery school for post-graduate mental health professionals, teaching imagery as a tool for healing and a "bridge to the inner world". Education and early professional career Epstein received his formal training as a medical doctor at New York Medical College, New York, NY, graduating in 1961. In 1961–62, he completed a rotating internship at Stamford Hospital, Stamford, CT, and in 1962–65, he took a residency in psychiatry at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, NY.
