Tournament Of Roses Floats
Tournament of Roses Parade floats are flower-covered parade floats, used in the annual New Year's Day Tournament of Roses Parade held in Pasadena, California. They evolved from flower-decorated horse carriages with the present day requirement that "every inch of every float must be covered with flowers or other natural materials, such as leaves, seeds or bark". Three civic and floral industry leaders judge the floats and award prizes in 24 categories. Some communities and organizational sponsors, such as the City of Burbank, the City of Downey, City of South Pasadena, the City of Sierra Madre, the City of La Cañada Flintridge and the Cal Poly Universities, are referred to as "self-built floats" as they design, construct and decorate their floats solely on volunteer hours; but most are now built by professional float building companies. A float is a decorated platform, either built on a vehicle like a truck or towed behind one, which is a component of many festive parades, such as those of Rio Carnival, Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, the São Paulo Carnival, Carnival in São Paulo, the Carnival of Viareggio, the Maltese Carnival, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, the 500 Festival Parade, the United States Presidential Inaugural Parade, and the Tournament of Roses Parade. For the latter event, floats are decorated entirely in flowers or other plant material. Float history Parade floats were first introduced in the Middle Ages. Churches used pageant wagons as movable scenery for passion plays, and craftsmen with artisan guilds built pageant wagons for their specified craft. Rose Bowl Game
The Rose Bowl Game is an annual American college football bowl game, traditionally played on January 1 (New Year's Day) at the Rose Bowl (stadium), Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. When New Year's Day falls on a Sunday, the game is played on Monday, January 2. Nicknamed "The Granddaddy of Them All" by broadcaster Keith Jackson, it was the first postseason football game ever established. The Rose Bowl Game was first played in 1902 as the Tournament East–West football game, and has been played annually since 1916. Since 1945, it has been the highest attended college football bowl game. The game is a part of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association's "America's New Year Celebration", which also includes the historic Rose Parade. Shane Connolly (florist)
Shane Connolly (born May 1963) is a Northern Irish florist. He entered the profession in the late 1980s after a brief career with the Ministry of Defence. Connolly founded his own floristry company in London in 1989. He was commissioned by the Royal Family to produce arrangements for the 2005 wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton and the 2023 coronation of Charles III and Camilla. Paula Shane Pryke (born 29 April 1960) is a British florist and author. Family and education Pryke was educated at Culford School (1970–1978), followed by Trinity and All Saints College (then affiliated with the University of Leeds), where she studied history Pryke also earned a licentiate from the Royal Academy of Music in 1985.
