Totteridge
Totteridge is a residential area and former village in the London Borough of Barnet, England. It is a mixture of suburban development and open land (including some farmland) situated 8 miles (13 km) north north-west of Charing Cross. It is part of the Whetstone, London, Whetstone postal district (N20). It gives its name to a ward in the borough and to the ''St Andrew, Totteridge'' ecclesiastical parish of the Diocese of St Albans. History This area was called Tataridge in the 13th century. It may have been named after someone called Tata. The ridge is the high ground between the valleys of the Dollis Brook and Folly Brook. The Manor of Copped Hall (or Coppeed Hall) was located to the south of St Andrew's church in Totteridge, Hertfordshire, in an area that is now part of the London Borough of Barnet. Early history The early history of the manor is uncertain but it may be the capital messuage or dwelling held in the 16th century by John Copwood who owned it at the time of his death in 1543, leaving a daughter, Sophia. It seems to have passed soon afterwards into the possession of the family of Clyffe. Richard Clyffe held a "manor or capital messuage" in Totteridge at his death in 1566, leaving it to his illegitimate son William Clyffe or Smyth, with remainder to Richard's brother Geoffrey and his son Richard. Dollis Brook
Dollis Brook is a waterway which runs through Barnet in north London. It is a tributary of the River Brent, which is itself a tributary of the River Thames. The Dollis Valley Greenwalk follows almost all of Dollis Brook, apart from a short section at the beginning which passes through private land, and the London Loop follows it as far as Barnet Lane. The name Dollis is probably derived from the Middle English word 'dole', meaning the shares of land in the common field. Course Dollis Brook rises at two points, one on Mote End Farm and the other on the London Loop and Dollis Valley Greenwalk at – the latter only has water after heavy rain. The brook then flows through private land under Hendon Wood Lane. Whetstone, London
Whetstone is a suburb of north London, in the London Borough of Barnet, bearing the postcode London N20, N20. It is served by an Underground station called Totteridge and Whetstone (Totteridge being to the west of Whetstone). Whetstone is around 7.8 miles north of Charing Cross. Prior to 1965 it was part of the Municipal Borough of Finchley, Borough of Finchley. The High Road is the A1000 road, A1000, formerly known as the Great North Road (Great Britain), Great North Road, parts of it still bear this name. Henry Edward Manning
Henry Edward Manning (15 July 1808 – 14 January 1892) was an English prelate of the Catholic Church, and the second Archbishop of Westminster from 1865 until his death in 1892. He was ordained in the Church of England as a young man, but converted to Catholicism in the aftermath of the Gorham judgement. Early life Manning was born on 15 July 1808 at his grandfather's home, Copped Hall, Totteridge, Hertfordshire. He was the third and youngest son of William Manning, a prominent merchant and slave owner, who served as a director and (1812–1813) as a governor of the Bank of England and also sat in Parliament for 30 years, representing in the Tory interest Plympton Earle, Lymington, Evesham and Penryn consecutively. Manning's mother, Mary (died 1847), daughter of Henry Lannoy Hunter, of Beech Hill, and sister of Sir Claudius Stephen Hunter, 1st Baronet, came from a family of French Huguenot extraction. Barnet Rural District
Elstree Rural District (until 1941 called Barnet Rural District) was a rural district in Hertfordshire, England from 1894 to 1974. Creation The district had its origins in the Barnet Rural Sanitary District, which had been created in 1872, covering the rural parts of the Barnet Poor Law Union. Under the Local Government Act 1894, rural sanitary districts became rural districts on 28 December 1894. Where districts straddled county boundaries, as Barnet Rural Sanitary District did, separate rural districts were to be created for the parts in each county. The parish of South Mimms was in Middlesex, and became the South Mimms Rural District, whilst the rest of the Barnet Sanitary Rural District was in Hertfordshire and became the Barnet Rural District. Barnet Urban District
Barnet was a local government district in south Hertfordshire from 1863 to 1965 around the town of Barnet. Creation Barnet Local Government District was created on 5 October 1863, after the town's ratepayers decided to adopt the Local Government Act 1858, and it was governed by a local board. Under the Public Health Act 1872 local government districts were also designated as urban sanitary districts. The Local Government Act 1894 ( 56 & 57 Vict. c. 73) reconstituted the area as an urban district with effect from 31 December 1894, and the local board was replaced by an elected Barnet Urban District Council. Woodside Park
Woodside Park is a suburban residential area in the London Borough of Barnet, in the North Finchley postal district of N12. Description The area to the east of the tube station consists predominantly of large Victorian and Edwardian houses, many of which have been converted into flats. It also contains Woodside Park Synagogue and a Jewish school operating from the synagogue. The western and north-western part of the area, which can also be regarded as the part of Totteridge in N12 rather than N20, is sometimes called Woodside Park Garden Suburb and consists of semi-detached or detached 3 to 4 bedroom houses built in the 1950s. Folly Brook
Folly Brook is a long Stream, brook in the London Borough of Barnet. It is a tributary of Dollis Brook, which is a tributary of the River Brent, which is a tributary of the River Thames. Folly Brook is lined for most of its length by narrow strips of woodland and scrub, with a good variety of trees and shrubs. It is one of the best streams in Barnet for small aquatic invertebrates, including several species of Caddisfly, caddis fly and a Plecoptera, stonefly, which are only found in unpolluted waters. The upper brook Folly Brook rises near the bottom of Highwood Hill, Mill Hill, and flows east through fields and public open spaces to Woodside Park (Barnet, London), Woodside Park.
