Toto (lottery)
Toto (est. in 1968 and stylised as TOTO) is a legalised form of lottery sold in Singapore, known by different names elsewhere. It is held by Singapore Pools, the only legal lottery operator in Singapore. As of April 2015, it was the second most popular type of gambling activity after 4-Digits. The profits from Toto go to the Singapore Totalisator Board (the owner of Singapore Pools) which uses the money for charity and other worthy causes. History of Toto Toto was established to control widespread illegal gambling in Singapore during the 1960s. A manual version of Toto was launched on 9 June 1968. In 1981, "snowballing" was introduced. It allowed the top prize to increase from draw to draw. The system entry mode is introduced so multiple bets can be made on a single coupon. Singapore Pools
Singapore Pools (Private) Limited is a state-owned lottery subsidiary company in Singapore. As a wholly owned subsidiary of the Tote Board, it is the only operator that is legally allowed to run lotteries in Singapore. History Singapore Pools was incorporated on 23 May 1968 to curb illegal gambling in Singapore. It provided Singaporeans with a legal avenue to bet on lotteries, countering the rampant illegal betting syndicates that were present. Since 1 May 2004, Singapore Pools is owned by Tote Board, a statutory board under the Ministry of Finance. Singapore Pool's products and services are regulated by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Social and Family Development. 4-Digits (abbreviation: 4-D) is a lottery in Germany, Singapore, and Malaysia. Individuals play by choosing any number from 0000 to 9999. Then, twenty-three winning numbers are drawn each time. If one of the numbers matches the one that the player has bought, a prize is won. A draw is conducted to select these winning numbers. 4-Digits is a fixed-odds game. Magnum 4D is the first legalised 4D Operator licensed by the Malaysian Government to operate 4D. The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) was a ministry of the Government of Singapore tasked with building a "cohesive and resilient" society in Singapore. A red envelope, red packet, lai see (), hongbao or ang pau () is a gift of money given during holidays or for special occasions such as weddings, graduations, and birthdays. It originated in China before spreading across parts of Southeast Asia and other countries with sizable ethnic Chinese populations. In the mid-2010s, a digital equivalent to the practice emerged within messaging apps with mobile wallet systems localized for the Chinese New Year, particularly WeChat. National Council On Problem Gambling (Singapore)
The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) is a statutory board under the Ministry of Social and Family Development of the Government of Singapore. It was established on 31 August 2005 to address problem gambling, following the government's decision to legalise casino gambling and build two integrated resorts at Marina Bay and Sentosa. The council is chaired by Sim Gim Guan and has 17 members. One of the main tasks of NCPG is to promote public awareness on problem gambling. In January 2006, a TV series ''Bet Your Life'' was launched to examine problem gambling and its effects on families and society. A fund of S$150,000 was also set aside for public education programmes initiated by voluntary welfare organisations.
