''Kompakt: Total 4'' or ''Total 4'' is the fourth installment, released on 23 July 2002, of the influential Cologne-based microhouse label Kompakt's annual compilation album, compilation of vinyl record, vinyl releases and exclusives from its biggest artists and most promising newcomers. All tracks on the vinyl edition are previously unreleased. The CD edition includes most of the tracks from the vinyl edition, and additionally some songs which were at the time of release already available on 12-inch format. (Superpitcher covers a song from Brian Eno's 1974 solo debut Here Come the Warm Jets.) Microhouse
Microhouse, buftech or sometimes just minimal, is a subgenre of house music strongly influenced by minimalism and 1990s techno. History Microhouse has its roots in the minimal techno, bitpop (both developed in the early 1990s), and house (developed in the early 1980s) genres of music. Its first echoes appeared in a glitch album by German experimental artist Oval, in 1993. Like many contemporary electronic genres, Microhouse has many influences, most notably techno and the "click and pop" garage house that has emerged from Yorkshire Bleeps and Bass (or "Bleep"), bitpop and minimal techno. Contrasting with tech house, which is often thought of as 'house music with elements of techno in its arrangement and instrumentation', microhouse is more aptly described as 'housey minimal techno' – a marriage of the funky and groovy backroom house elements with bitpop and the driving, repetitive sound of techno. Wolfgang Voigt
Wolfgang Voigt (born 1961) is an electronic music DJ and producer from Cologne, Germany, known for his output under various aliases, such as Gas. He signed on numerous record labels, including Warp, Harvest, Raster-Noton, Force Inc, Astral Industries and Kompakt. The latter was co-founded by Voigt alongside Michael Mayer and Jürgen Paape. He is considered one of the most influential minimal techno artists. Life and career Together with his brother Reinhard Voigt (alias ''Sweet Reinhard'', ''Kron'' and ''Pentax''), Wolfgang Voigt is considered one of the founders and most influential artists of the minimal techno scene. Kompakt (Labelcode: LC 12012) is a Cologne-based electronic music independent record label and vinyl/CD distributor, owned by Wolfgang Voigt, Michael Mayer and Jürgen Paape. They specialize in microhouse and minimal techno, and are known for their ''Total'' compilation series which reached its seventeenth installment in 2017. Superpitcher
Aksel Schaufler better known by his stage name Superpitcher, is a German producer affiliated with Cologne's Kompakt music label. Background Superpitcher made his first appearance on Kompakt's ''Total 2'' compilation album in 2000 with the song "Shadows". In 2001, he contributed a track to Kompakt's first Speicher 12" and released ''Heroin'', a three-track 12" with three different sounds; "Tomorrow" was later included on that year's '' Total 3''. On 2002's '' Total 4'' there was another track by Schaufler, an electropop cover of Brian Eno's "Baby's on Fire". Soon after that, Schaufler released his second 12", ''Yesterday'', which featured re-workings of the songs "Tomorrow" and "Heroin". Michael Mayer (musician)
Michael Mayer (born 11 December 1971) is an electronic musician from Cologne, Germany. Mayer is a remixer, DJ and producer, and has released several singles on the Kompakt music label, working with founder Wolfgang Voigt. Mayer has also released music on Kompakt-related labels New Trance Atlantic and Kreisel 99. Biography Mayer was born and raised in Black Forest, Germany. At the age of 20, he moved to Cologne. With the help of Wolfgang and Reinhardt Voigt, he established Kompakt. In 2003, he released a pair of mixes. The first was based on several releases in Kompakt's "Speicher" series, while the second was commissioned by London's Fabric series. The following year, Mayer released a second Speicher mix and finally delivered his long-promised debut album of productions. Justus Köhncke
Justus Köhncke (born 1966 in Gießen) is a German techno producer and pop musician from Cologne. Köhncke was a member of the house trio Whirlpool Productions, along with Hans Nieswandt and Eric D. Clark. Together, they had a number one hit in Italy in 1997 with their house track "From Disco to Disco". Since 1999, he has released tracks on the Cologne label Kompakt. In his music, he combines minimal techno with disco and Krautrock elements. Musical collaborations In 2004, Köhncke produced the single "Durch die Nacht" for Andreas Dorau. He also worked with Dirk von Lowtzow of Tocotronic, as well as for Phantom/Ghost. In the last few years, he has also worked on soundtracks with Irmin Schmidt, a member of the band Can. Together with Kai Althoff they produced under the name Subtle Tease. In 2013, he co-created a side project with Hot Chip frontman, Alexis Taylor. Thomas Fehlmann (born 1957) is a Swiss composer/producer who lives in Berlin, Germany, and has been active in electronic music since the 1980s. He is currently active on the Kompakt record label based in Germany. Fehlmann is an on-and-off member of Sun Electric and The Orb. Notable releases include ''Visions of Blah'' on the Kompakt label, The Orb's 2004 ''Bicycles and Tricycles,'' and 2010's ''Gute Luft'' album soundtrack to the TV documentary ''24H Berlin''. His 2007 album ''Honigpumpe'' was rated 8.6 on the ''Pitchfork'' music review site.
