Torsten Engberg
Lieutenant General Torsten Reinhold Engberg (28May 1934 – 7February 2018) was a senior Swedish Coastal Artillery officer. Engberg was Chief of the Naval Staff from 1984 to 1987 and Chief of the Defence Staff from 1987 to 1991 as well as military commander of the Middle Military District (Milo M) from 1991 to 1994. He also served as the first director general of the Swedish Fortifications Agency from 1994 to 1999. Early life Engberg was born on 28 May 1934 in Norrfjärden Parish, Norrbotten County, Sweden, the son of Amandus Engberg and his wife Märta (née Johansson). He passed ''studentexamen'' in 1957. He was selected for conscription in Norrbotten Regiment (I 19) in Boden but wanted to join the Swedish Coastal Artillery and began his training in Karlskrona Coastal Artillery Regiment (KA 2) in Karlskrona. Royal Swedish Naval Academy
The Royal Swedish Naval Academy ( sv, Kungliga Sjökrigsskolan, KSS) was a school for officer training for the Swedish Navy, which operated in various forms between the years 1756 and 1987. History 1683–1791 In 1683, when the charter was issued that "those who were proposed to become officers in the navy, should undergo a naval officer exam", the navy only possessed the training schools, Mate's and Artillery Schools (''Styrmans- och artilleriskolorna'') in Karlskrona which was established by Admiral H. Wachtmeister. Later at Sveaborg a naval school for officers and cadets of the Fleet of the Army was established. Swedish Submarine Incidents
The submarine hunts or submarine incidents were a series of several incidents involving foreign submarines that occurred in Swedish territorial waters during the Cold War, attributed in Swedish media to the Soviet Union. On October 27, 1981, the Soviet submarine ''U 137'' became stranded deep inside Swedish waters. The Swedish Navy responded aggressively to these perceived threats, increasing patrols in Swedish waters, mining and electronically monitoring passages, and repeatedly chasing and attacking suspected submarines with depth charge bombs, but no hits or casualties were ever recorded. This incident encouraged development of incident weapons to increase security of future submarine incidents. Reports of new submarine sightings and television imagery of Swedish Navy helicopters firing depth charges into coastal waters against suspected intruders became commonplace in the mid-to-late 1980s. Skövde
Skövde () is a locality and urban centre in Skövde Municipality and Västra Götaland County, in the Västergötland (Western Gothland region) in central Southern Sweden. Gotland Coastal Artillery Regiment
The Gotland Coastal Artillery Regiment ( sv, Gotlands kustartilleriregemente), designation KA 3, was a Swedish Navy coastal artillery regiment of the Swedish Armed Forces which operated between 1937 and 2000. The unit was based in Fårösund in Gotland. History The military presence in the areas around northern Gotland began in connection with the Crimean War. Fårösund became a strategically important place. English and French fleets used the sound as a base, stage station and observation point during the war against Russia. In 1885 there was a new concern between Russia and England. New ships were expected. Both Russia and Germany demanded that Fårösund be fortified if the Swedish neutrality was to be recognized and respected. Vaxholm is a locality and the seat of Vaxholm Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden. It is located on the island of in the Stockholm archipelago. The name Vaxholm comes from Vaxholm Castle, which was constructed in 1549 on an islet with this name on the inlet to Stockholm, for defence purposes, by King Gustav Vasa. For historical reasons it has always been referred to as a ''city'', despite the small number of inhabitants, which as of 2010 total was 4,857. Eastern Military District ( sv, Östra militärområdet, Milo Ö), originally IV Military District ( sv, IV. militärområdet) was a Swedish military district, a command of the Swedish Armed Forces that had operational control over Eastern Sweden, for most time of its existence corresponding to the area covered by the counties of Östergötland, Södermanland, Stockholm, Uppsala and Västmanland. The headquarters of Milo Ö were located in Strängnäs. The Defence Staff ( sv, Försvarsstaben, Fst) is the Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces' staff body and command resource for military strategic command, mission dialogue and reporting to the Swedish government, as well as being responsible for the war organization's capability, availability and combat readiness. The latter with the support of the service branch commanders and the service branch staffs. The Defence Staff was originally established in 1937 and was commanded by the Chief of the Defence Staff.
