Tors (band)
Tors are a three-piece indie folk band from Devon, United Kingdom, composed of brothers Matt and Theo Weedon, and Jack Bowden. Career The band was founded in Guildford, Surrey by brothers Theo and Matt Weedon, grandsons of influential guitarist Bert Weedon, and Jack Bowden, a drummer whom the brothers recruited via an advert on Gumtree. The band took their name from Tor (rock formation), tors, a type of rock formation commonly found in Dartmoor National Park, after moving to Devon from Guildford. On 5 July 2023, it was announced that Tors had been signed to Glassnote Records. In June 2023, they went on a successful sold out headline tour across the UK before playing a sold out headline show at New York's Rockwood Music Hall in July. In the middle of this, their single "Amsterdam" became BBC Radio One Introducing Track of the Week, making one of their dreams come true. Tor (rock Formation)
A tor, which is also known by geomorphologists as either a castle koppie or kopje, is a large, free-standing rock (geology), rock outcrop that rises abruptly from the surrounding smooth and gentle slopes of a rounded hill summit or ridge crest. Ivan Tors
Ivan Tors (born Iván Törzs; June 12, 1916 – June 4, 1983) was a Hungary, Hungarian playwright, film director, screenwriter, and Film producer, film and television producer with an emphasis on non-violent but exciting science fiction, underwater sequences, and stories involving animals. He started a Miami-based film studio now known as Greenwich Studios, and later a music company. Biography Tors was born to a Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary. He wrote several plays in his native country before moving to the United States just prior to World War II. He arrived with his brother Ervin in July 1939 on the SS Albert Ballin, SS ''Hansa'' and had come to study at Fordham University in New York City. He subsequently enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps then transferred to the Office of Strategic Services. Following the war, he was contracted to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a screenwriter. Ten Tors
Ten Tors is an annual weekend hike in early May, on Dartmoor, southwest England. Organized by the British Army, starting in 1960, it brings together teams of six young people, with the 2,400 young participants hiking to checkpoints on ten specified tors. The majority of entrants are schools, colleges, Scout groups and Cadet squadrons from South West England, though groups from across the UK have regularly taken part, as have teams from Australia and New Zealand. However, from 2012, only teams from the South West of England are eligible to take part, due to the large numbers of entrants. Event format Teams of six are required to visit ten specified tors and 5 to 10 via tors, these are required although not counted towards the 8 tor limit on the first day or your ten tors.; on the top of each tor is a checkpoint.
