Torrington Company
The Torrington Company was a firm that developed in Torrington, Connecticut, originally called the Excelsior Needle Company. It was formed in 1866 around the new idea of using a "cold swaging" technique to create better sewing machine needles, as Torrington expanded, it began to produce other goods. Since WW2 they focused on producing needle bearings, until their main plants were shut down in 2006. They were bought by Ingersoll-Rand in 1968, and bought again by Timken in 2003. Torrington is the most populated municipality and largest city in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States, and the Northwest Hills Planning Region, Connecticut, Northwest Hills Planning Region. Ball Bearing
A ball bearing is a type of rolling-element bearing that uses balls to maintain the separation between the bearing races. The purpose of a ball bearing is to reduce rotational friction and support radial and axial loads. It achieves this by using at least two races to contain the balls and transmit the loads through the balls. In most applications, one race is stationary and the other is attached to the rotating assembly (e.g., a hub or shaft). As one of the bearing races rotates it causes the balls to rotate as well.
