Torphins ( ; ) is a village in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland which lies about west of Aberdeen. It is situated on the A980, about north-west of Banchory, and was once served by the Great North of Scotland Railway. With a population of around 1,400, it is one of the larger villages in Deeside. Toponymy The name ''Torphins'' may come from the Gaelic ''Torr Fionn'', meaning fair/white hill, or as a corruption of ''Tor Feithachan'', meaning hill of the bogs. Another less likely namesake is Thorfinn Sigurdsson, Earl of Orkney, who might have passed through the area due to his partnership with Macbeth. It appeared on maps in 1750 under the name ''Turfins''. Amenities The village has many facilities including a primary school (with about 250 pupils attending each year), a large park with play area, a car dealer, a hairdressers, two tennis courts, a bowling green and a doctor's surgery. Deeside Railway
The Deeside Railway was a passenger and goods railway between Aberdeen and Ballater in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Opening in 1853 to Banchory, an extension reached Aboyne in 1859. A separate company, the Aboyne & Braemar Railway, built an extension to Ballater and this opened in 1866. By 1855 there were five services a day over the long line, taking between 1 hour 50 minutes and hours. The line was used by the British Royal Train, Royal Train for travel to and from Balmoral Castle from 1853 and a special 'Messenger Train' ran daily when the Royal Family was in residence. The railways were absorbed by the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR) on 1 August 1875 for the Deeside Railway and 31 January 1876 for the Aboyne & Braemar. The line became part of the London and North Eastern Railway in 1923, and part of British Railways when nationalised in 1948. Torphins Railway Station
Torphins railway station served the village of Torphins from 1859 to 1966 on the Deeside Railway that ran from Aberdeen (Joint) to Ballater. History The station was opened in 1859 on the Deeside branch by the Aboyne Extension Railway and at first its services were operated by the Deeside Railway. Later it became part of the GNoSR and at grouping merged with the London and North Eastern Railway. It stood 23.75 miles (38 km) from Aberdeen and 19.5 miles (31 km) from Ballater. It was closed to passengers on 28 February 1966. The line has been lifted and sections form part of the Deeside Way long-distance footpath. Infrastructure The station was of a very unusual design with a passing loop lying to the west of the original single platformed station and platform as shown on the 1866 OS map.
