The Toronto Rowing and Athletic Association (also known as the Torontos as well as Toronto Rugby and Athletic Association) were an ORFU football team in the early 20th century. The team was founded in 1908 as Toronto Amateur Athletic Club and became the team of the ''Toronto Rowing and Athletic Association'' in 1912. The team won the ORFU championship in 1915, 1919 and 1920. Canadian football news in 1912 The Regina Rugby Club adopted red and black as their jersey colours, one explanation being that these were the colours of the (supposed) Canadian contingent with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders in the Spanish–American War. The Hamilton Alerts were suspended by the ORFU on November 23 for flaunting the authority of the Union. The Toronto Rowing and Athletic Club had protested a penalty call which had resulted in a victory for the Alerts. The ORFU ordered the game be re-played on the 23rd, but the Alerts refused to field a full team. The Alerts lost to Toronto, 39–7, while the main squad lost a regularly scheduled match in Hamilton to the Tigers, 12–8. The Alerts went on to defeat the Toronto Argonauts, 11–4, in the Grey Cup game. Many of the players joined the Tigers of IRFU the following season. Hamilton Tigers (football)
The Hamilton Tigers were a Canadian football team based in Hamilton, Ontario that played in the Ontario Rugby Football Union from 1883 to 1906 and 1948 to 1949 and in the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union from 1907 to 1947. The club was a founding member of both the ORFU in 1883 and the IRFU in 1907. Throughout their history, the Tigers won five Grey Cup Championships and two Dominion Championships, including the 1908 title, the year before the Grey Cup was first awarded. After struggling to compete on a sound financial level with the Hamilton Wildcats, who had joined the ORFU in 1941 and later the IRFU, the two clubs merged in 1950 to form the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Toronto Amateur Athletic Club (TAAC) or Torontos was an athletics organization in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The club fielded teams in various sports, including ice hockey and rugby football. The Toronto Amateur Athletic Club also had a gymnasium on Ossington Avenue and a boxing club. History The Toronto Athletic Club was founded in the 1800s as an unincorporated association. In the 1882 directory, its office is at 185 Yonge Street. In 1890, its office was at 25 King Street West, and its grounds were at 10 Elm Avenue, then north-east of the city, at the intersection of Elm and Sherbourne Street. By 1892, the Club had incorporated and had moved to 149 College Street, a building designed by architect E. J. Lennox, and reputedly holding the first indoor swimming pool, as well as a gymnasium and billiards room.
