TORNIDAE
Tornidae is a family of very small and minute sea snails with an operculum, marine gastropod mollusks in the clade Littorinimorpha. This family used to be known as the Vitrinellidae.Bouchet, P.; Gofas, S. (2014). Tornidae Sacco, 1896 (1884). Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=124 on 2014-12-03 Iredale has shown that the family Adeorbidae Monterosato, 1884 should be called Tornidae (Iredale, Journal of Conchology, 14, 344) Family names cited with two dates (the second one in parentheses) are those ruled by Article 40(2) of ICZN. "If ... a family-group name was replaced before 1961 because of the synonymy of the type genus, the replacement name is to be maintained if it is in prevailing usage. Elachorbis
''Elachorbis'' is a genus of minute sea snails or micromolluscs, marine gastropod molluscs in the family Tornidae. Taxonomy The exact placement of this genus has long been contested. Tom Iredale established ''Elachorbis'' in 1914 within the family Liotiidae. Cotton (1945) also classified ''Elachorbis'' within the family Liotiidae. Powell (1979) and ITIS (2011) classified ''Elachorbis'' within the family Cyclostrematidae (which is a synonym of Liotiidae). Various authors have classified this genus in the Skeneidae, which is now the Skeneinae, a subfamily within the Turbinidae. The genus ''Elachorbis'' is sometimes referred to the subfamily Vitrinellinae within the family Tornidae."''Circulus'' Jeffreys, 1865" OBIS Indo-Pacific Molluscan Database, accessed 17 February 2011. Distribution This species can be found along the coast of Western Australia and South Australia in shallow waters and in depths up to 150 fathom A fathom is a unit of length in the imperial and the U.S. customary systems equal to , used especially for measuring the depth of water. The fathom is neither an International Standard (SI) unit, nor an internationally-accepted non-SI unit. Hi ...s (or 275 m). Description The small shell varies in thickness. It possesses two coarse, spiral keels (a spiral ridge usually marking a change of slope in the outline of the shell) that can vary in strength or even be obsolete. The shell has a wide perspective umbilicus, and a discontinuous peristome. References * Powell A. W. Littorinimorpha is a large order of snails, gastropods, consisting primarily of sea snails ( marine species), but also including some freshwater snails ( aquatic species) and land snails ( terrestrial species).Bouchet P. & Rocroi J.-P. (Ed.); Frýda J., Hausdorf B., Ponder W., Valdes A. & Warén A. 2005. ''Classification and nomenclator of gastropod families''. Malacologia: International Journal of Malacology, 47(1-2). The order Littorinimorpha contains many gastropoda families that were formerly placed in the order Mesogastropoda, as introduced by J. Thiele in his work from 1921. Taxonomy Of The Gastropoda (Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005)
The taxonomy of the Gastropoda as it was revised in 2005 by Philippe Bouchet and Jean-Pierre Rocroi is a system for the scientific classification of gastropod mollusks. (Gastropods are a taxonomic class of animals which consists of snails and slugs of every kind, from the land, from freshwater, and from saltwater.) The paper setting out this taxonomy was published in the journal '' Malacologia''. The system encompasses both living and extinct groups, as well as some fossils whose classification as gastropods is uncertain. The Bouchet & Rocroi system was the first complete gastropod taxonomy that primarily employed the concept of clades, and was derived from research on molecular phylogenetics; in this context a clade is a "natural grouping" of organisms based upon a statistical cluster analysis. In contrast, most of the previous overall taxonomic schemes for gastropods relied on morphological features to classify these animals, and used taxon ranks such as order, superorder ... Columella (gastropod)
The columella (meaning "little column") or (in older texts) pillar is a central anatomical feature of a coiled snail shell, a gastropod shell. The columella is often only clearly visible as a structure when the shell is broken, sliced in half vertically, or viewed as an X-ray image. The columella runs from the apex of the shell to the midpoint of the undersurface of the shell, or the tip of the siphonal canal in those shells which have a siphonal canal. If a snail shell is visualized as a cone of shelly material which is wrapped around a central axis, then the columella more or less coincides spatially with the central axis of the shell. In the case of shells that have an umbilicus, the columella is a hollow structure. The columella of some groups of gastropod shells can have a number of plications or folds (the columellar fold, plaits or plicae), which are usually visible when looking to the inner lip into the aperture of the shell. These folds can be wide or narrow, promine ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
