Tornadoes Of 2016
This page documents notable tornadoes and tornado outbreaks worldwide in 2016. Strong and destructive tornadoes form most frequently in the United States, Bangladesh, Brazil and East India, Eastern India, but they can occur almost anywhere under the right conditions. Tornadoes also develop occasionally in southern Canada during the Northern Hemisphere's summer and somewhat regularly at other times of the year across Europe, Asia, and Australia. Tornadic events are often accompanied with other forms of severe weather, including strong thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail. There were 1,059 tornadoes reported in the United States in 2016, of which 974 were confirmed. 2016 Katie Tornado
During the late afternoon hours of May 9, 2016, a violent Multiple-vortex tornado, multi-vortex EF4 tornado struck southern Katie, Oklahoma. The tornado was extremely erratic and killed one person while causing $1,000,000 (2016 USD) in damages. The tornado was extremely photogenic, and was heavily documented by storm chasers and civilians. Although the tornado retained high-end EF3 intensity for large portions of its life, it produced a small pocket of intense and violent EF4 damage, making it the first EF4 tornado in Oklahoma since 2013. It was also the first EF4 tornado in 2016, and the only violent tornado of the tornado outbreak of May 7–10, 2016. Woodburn, Indiana
Woodburn is a city in Maumee Township, Allen County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,551 at the 2020 census. History In 1865 Joseph Edgerton and Joseph Smith platted the town of Woodburn, or Phelps Station as it was called at that time. The two men chose this area due to the abundant timber, fertile ground, and nearby river. After two large, accidental fires in the area Joseph Edgerton sent his son Edward Edgerton to Woodburn to sell off large tracts of land for farming. This area was first known as Phelps Station due to the train depot. There were five families and a post office. In September 1865 the town was again platted with the name Woodburn due to the enormous wood burnings to clear the land. Kokomo, Indiana
Kokomo ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Howard County, Indiana, United States. Its population was 60,093 according to the U.S. Census Bureau 2024 estimate. Yancheng, Jiangsu
Yancheng (), formerly known as Yandu, is a prefecture-level city in the eastern coastal Jiangsu province, People's Republic of China. As the city with the largest jurisdictional area in Jiangsu, Yancheng borders Lianyungang to the north, Huai'an to the west, Yangzhou and Taizhou to the southwest, Nantong to the south, and the Yellow Sea to the east. Dodge City
Dodge City is a city in and the county seat of Ford County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 27,788. It was named after nearby Fort Dodge, which was named in honor of Grenville Dodge. The city is known in American culture for its history as a wild frontier town of the Old West. History The first settlement in the area that became Dodge City was Fort Mann, built by civilians in 1847. The fort was built to provide protection for travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. Tornado Family
A tornado family is a series of tornadoes spawned by the same supercell thunderstorm. These families form a line of successive or parallel tornado paths and can cover a short span or a vast distance. Tornado families are sometimes mistaken as a single continuous tornado, especially prior to the 1970s. Sometimes the tornado tracks can overlap and expert analysis is necessary to determine whether or not damage was created by a family or a single tornado. Oftentimes, tornadoes are small and don’t make it far before dying out. However, large tornadoes are also present in many situations that track for very long distances. To determine the average track length of a tornado, both of these factors must be taken into account. Dolores, Uruguay
Dolores is a city in the Soriano Department of western Uruguay.
