Torkel Lende
Torkel Jonson Lende (17 November 1849 – 11 January 1909) was a Norwegian inventor. In his young days he was a schoolmate of Arne Garborg. Like Garborg he took up teacher's studies, but he quit early to become an inventor. In 1873 Lende went on a tour of the Måløy area together with Sven Aarrestad; they were hired by Vestmannalaget to spread Landsmål culture. Inventions He first made inventions for small-scale home industry, but was soon picked up by the large-scale industry in Stavanger. Among his inventions there was a device to cut European sprat for the tinned food industry in the city. Arne Garborg
Arne Garborg (born Aadne Eivindsson Garborg) (25 January 1851 – 14 January 1924) was a Norwegian writer. Garborg championed the use of Landsmål (now known as Nynorsk, or New Norwegian), as a literary language; he translated the Odyssey into it. He founded the weekly '' Fedraheimen'' in 1877, in which he urged reforms in many spheres including political, social, religious, agrarian, and linguistic. He was married to Hulda Garborg. Life and career Garborg grew up on a farm named Garborg, near Undheim, in Time municipality at Jæren in Rogaland county. He grew up together with eight siblings. Although he was to become known as an author, it was as a newspaperman that he got his start. In 1872 he established the newspaper '' Tvedestrandsposten'', and in 1877 the '' Fedraheimen'', which he served as managing editor until 1892. Sogn Og Fjordane County Municipality
Sogn og Fjordane County Municipality () was the regional governing administration of the old Sogn og Fjordane county in Norway. The county municipality was established in its current form on 1 January 1976 when the law was changed to allow elected county councils in Norway. The county municipality was dissolved on 1 January 2020, when Sogn og Fjordane was merged with the neighboring Hordaland county, creating the new Vestland county which is led by the Vestland County Municipality. Måløy () is a List of towns and cities in Norway, town in the List of municipalities of Norway, municipality of Kinn in Vestland county, Norway. It is located on the southeastern side of the Vågsøy (island), island of Vågsøy, about northeast of the village of Holvik, Vågsøy, Holvika and about south of the village of Raudeberg. Sven Aarrestad
Sven Eivindsen Aarrestad (8 October 1850 – 19 January 1942) was a writer, politician, and leader in the Norwegian temperance movement during the 19th century. Biography Sven Aarrestad was born at Varhaug in Rogaland county, Norway. He was the eldest of six siblings born to his parents, farmer Eivind Torkelsen Aarrestad (1820–1902) and Inger Svensdatter Skretting (1829–1922). When he was four years old, his family moved to Årrestad in the community of Time, where he attended private school. From 1868 to 1869, he attended the teachers' college in Egersund. He was a teacher from 1869 to 1873 in Høyland. From 1873 to 1875, he went to the seminary in Stord. From 1875 to 1876, he was a teacher in Brevik, from 1876 to 1878 in Tønsberg, and from 1878 to 1891, managed a high school at Sande in Vestfold. Landsmål
Nynorsk (; ) is one of the two official written standards of the Norwegian language, the other being Bokmål. From 12 May 1885, it became the state-sanctioned version of Ivar Aasen's standard Norwegian language (''Landsmål''), parallel to the Dano-Norwegian written standard known as Riksmål. The name Nynorsk was introduced in 1929. After a series of reforms, it is still the written standard closer to , whereas Bokmål is closer to Riksmål and Danish. European Sprat
The European sprat (''Sprattus sprattus''), also known as brisling, brisling sardine, bristling, garvie, garvock, Russian sardine, russlet, skipper or whitebait, is a species of small marine fish in the herring family Clupeidae. Found in European, West Asian and North African waters, it has silver grey scales and white-grey flesh. Specific seas in which the species occurs include the Irish Sea, Black Sea, Baltic Sea and Sea of the Hebrides. The fish is the subject of fisheries, particularly in Scandinavia, and is made into fish meal, as well as being used for human consumption. When used for food it can be canned, salted, breaded, fried, boiled, grilled, baked, deep fried, marinated, broiled, and smoked.
