Topeka Sizzlers
The Topeka Sizzlers, originally the Kansas City Sizzlers, were a professional basketball team based in Kansas City, Missouri from 1985 to 1986 until they relocated to Topeka, Kansas where they played from 1986 to 1990. The Sizzlers were members of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). Bernard Glannon purchased a new CBA franchise on June 28, 1985 which he nicknamed the "Sizzlers". During their first and only season in Kansas City the team played their home games at Municipal Auditorium. Citing the over-saturated sports market in Kansas City, Glannon re-located the Sizzlers to Topeka, Kansas before the 1986–87 season. The team used Lee Arena on the campus of Washburn University while construction of Landon Arena was completed. A group of 14 investors led by married business partners Jim & Bonnie Garrett purchased the Topeka Sizzlers from Glannon before the 1988–89 season. Earl Jones (basketball)
Earl Amasa Jones (born January 13, 1961) is an American former professional basketball player. He was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks. Early years Jones attended Mount Hope High School for three seasons, where he led the school to 63 wins in 72 games and the 1978 West Virginia Class AA championship game, while he averaged 28 points. But he struggled outside of the basketball court and at one point as a junior, missed 63 consecutive days of school. As a senior, he was convinced by William Robinson (who had become his legal guardian), to transfer to Spingarn High School, where he had to go through a legal process over his eligibility. He averaged 20 points and 15 rebounds per game, while leading the team to a city championship. Bill Ficke is an American basketball coach and scout. Before the 1982–83 season, Ficke hired by the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) to be an assistant coach. He returned to the team for the 1983–84 NBA season. ''Denver Post'' sports writer Terry Frei recalled that Ficke would bring his golden retriever to practice with him. Ficke served as head coach of the Nuggets during a game against the Phoenix Suns on March 22, 1983, because Denver head coach Doug Moe was out with influenza. Denver won the game 131–117 with Nuggets forward Kiki Vandeweghe, who led all scorers with 29. An expansion draft, in professional sports, occurs when a sports league decides to create one or more new expansion teams or sports franchising, franchises. This occurs mainly in Sports in North America, North American sports and closed leagues. One of the ways of stocking the new team or teams is an expansion draft. Although how each league conducts them varies, and they vary from occasion to occasion, the system is usually something similar to the following: Each existing team is told it can "protect" a certain number of its existing contracted players by furnishing their names to the league office on or before a certain date. The expansion team(s) then are allowed to select players not on the protected lists in a manner somewhat similar to an entry draft (sports), draft.
