The New Power Generation, also known as the NPG, was the backing band of musician Prince from 1990 to 2013. They were replaced by 3rdeyegirl as his backing band in 2013. In 2015, the New Power Generation reunited as Prince's backing band for his final studio album before his death, '' Hit n Run Phase Two''. They reunited once again in 2017 for a US and European tour. History The phrase "Welcome to the New Power Generation" was mentioned on the opening track of 1988's ''Lovesexy''. New Power Generation was used for the first time as a band name in the 1990 film '' Graffiti Bridge'', and a song entitled "New Power Generation" appeared on the accompanying soundtrack album. Olivia "Liv" Warfield is an American R&B singer-songwriter from Peoria, Illinois north of Springfield. She was part of Prince's New Power Generation and as of 2016 is with Roadcase Royale, a band formed with Nancy Wilson and members of Heart. Personal life and career Warfield grew up the daughter of a Pentecostal deacon listening to gospel music, with a strict background which did not allow her to listen to secular music; she used to sing Whitney Houston songs to herself when her parents were not around. She graduated from Peoria Notre Dame High School in Peoria in 1997. She later moved from Peoria to go to college in Portland, Oregon on a track scholarship at Portland State University. Donna Grantis is a Canadian guitarist, best known for performing and recording with Prince (musician), Prince & 3rdeyegirl. On September 30, 2014, Prince and 3rdeyegirl released their debut album, ''Plectrumelectrum'', which reached #1 on the Billboard Rock chart. Ida Kristine Nielsen (born 1975), also known as Bass Ida, Bassida, and Ida Funkhouser, is a Danish bass player, composer and vocalist. She is known for being a member of several bands, such as Belgian Zap Mama, Danish pop rock band Michael Learns to Rock, American funk band the New Power Generation, and funk rock trio 3rdeyegirl (2012–present). The latter two were backing bands for Prince. History Nielsen started playing bass at age 16. Rhonda Smith is a Canadian bassist, best known for her work with Prince and Jeff Beck. Biography Smith was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Her family moved to Montreal when she was a child. She and her three siblings were encouraged to play music and she began playing baritone horn, keyboards, guitar, and eventually electric bass. In addition to taking private classical training on upright bass, Smith attended McGill University in Montreal studying jazz performance. After gaining some experience in the local rock scene, she moved on to work with Canadian artists Claude Dubois, Daniel Lavoie, Robert Charlebois and James Blovin.
