Henry Tonks
Henry Tonks, FRCS (9 April 1862 – 8 January 1937) was a British surgeon and later draughtsman and painter of figure subjects, chiefly interiors, and a caricaturist. He became an influential art teacher. He was one of the first British artists to be influenced by the French Impressionists; he exhibited with the New English Art Club, and was an associate of many of the more progressive artists of late Victorian Britain, including James McNeill Whistler, Walter Sickert, John Singer Sargent and George Clausen. Early life and career as a surgeon Tonks was born in Solihull. His family owned a brass foundry in Birmingham. He was educated briefly at Bloxham School, followed by Clifton College in Bristol, and then studied medicine at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton (1882–85) and the London Hospital in Whitechapel (1885–88). Dick Tonks
Richard William Tonks (born 21 February 1951) is a former national New Zealand rowing coach and a former rower who won a silver medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Through his coaching career he has coached crews to a total of 25 World Championship medals—including thirteen gold—and a total of seven Olympic medals—six of which were gold. Early life and rowing career Dick Tonks' father, Alan Tonks, was an accomplished rower and coach, and it is presumed that his influence was a major factor in Dick's taking up rowing at Wanganui Boys' College at the age of thirteen. He first competed at the Wanganui Secondary Schools Regatta in 1965 and subsequently—coached by his father—rowed in the school's first eight for three years. In 1970, back at the sport, he rowed for Otago in Dunedin and was able to earn a place on the national team in 1971. Greig Tonks (born 20 May 1989) is a Scottish former rugby union player who played for London Irish in the position of Fullback, Centre or Fly-half. He is currently a coach at Rams. Oliver Samuel Tonks (December 26, 1874 – December 25, 1953) was an American art historian, educator, and curator. Tonks was Professor of Art History Emeritus at Vassar College. Career Born in Malden, Tonks was educated at Harvard University, where he earned three degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in 1898, a Master of Arts in 1899, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Classical Archeology in 1903. He was the first to be awarded a doctorate at Harvard in that field, and wrote a dissertation on the Brygos Painter. Additionally, Tonks was a fellow at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens for the 1901 to 1902 academic year. In the following year, he acted as Assistant Curator of Classical Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Lewi Tonks (1897–1971) was an American quantum physicist noted for his discovery (with Marvin D. Girardeau) of the Tonks–Girardeau gas. Tonks was employed by General Electric for most of his working life, researching microwaves and ferromagnetism. He worked under Irving Langmuir on plasma physics, with a special interest in ball lightning, nuclear fusion, tungsten filament light bulbs, and lasers. Tonks advocated a logarithmic pressure scale for vacuum technology to replace the torr. Tonks was notable for his high ethical standards and concern with social problems. Several times, he put up bail money for people who could not afford to do so. He provided career counselling for the poor, and after retiring from GE worked as a volunteer for the Schenectady Human Rights Commission. He also campaigned on Vietnam war issues. Horace Norman Vincent Tonks
Horace Norman Vincent Tonks (29 January 1891 – 25 November 1959) was an Anglican colonial bishop in the Windward Islands from 1936 until 1949. He was born in Walsall, England, on 29 January 1891 to Henry and Emily Tonks and educated at the town's Queen Mary's Grammar School and Lichfield Theological College. Ordained in 1918 after a curacy in Fenton, he was priest in charge of Holy Cross, Airedale, then from 1926 to 1935 the vicar of Saint Sampson with Holy Trinity in York. After that he was Archdeacon of Grenada for a brief period in 1935 and 1936 before his appointment to the episcopate in the Windward Islands.
